The two previous posters are correct. A friend of mine got a flat screen TV and I asked "so are you going to get HD". And he said "nope - we've got digital" (which is simply standard def, and it looked kind of fuzzy). And he also had his X Box hooked up using the old yellow, red, and white plugs. In a way it kind of negated having a decent TV as the picture is only as good as the signal it is receiving. Eventually he figured out why stuff at my house was sharper and made the change, and now he can't believe it took him so long to make the switch.
I think that the HD package on Shaw (not including movies, HBO, etc.) is about $9 per month more. That gives you the main networks in HD (Canadian and American), Sportsnet, TSN, TSN2, The Score, and a handfull of other channels like Discovery, National Geographic, etc. Most of the HD channels are just HD versions of channels that your current cable package already has, but you'll really notice the difference.
Once you get the HD box, go and grab and HDMI cable to hook it up. It carried the video signal plus the audio, so it is nice and convenient. If you do gaming, you should hook your console up with one too. Don't get the $100 fancy dancy ones from Monster that Best Buy insists that you need. I got a 2 pack of 6' Philips from Costco and it was about $30, but you can probably find them cheaper. They look great.
Edit: I also believe that the Shaw HD box comes with one HDMI cable, so maybe open it up before you go home just to make sure. You may not need to buy one at all.
