Default Samsung LCD HDTV - grainy and blurry??

Recently I got a free Samsung LCD HDTV from Air miles (this is my first HDTV)... no matter how how much I change the picture settings the picture looks 'grainy and blurry'. My cable source is standard with the regular antenna. I googled the problem and many suggestions directed that I needed a HDMI source.... My TV provider is Shaw and was wondering if I need something to convert my standard cable to HD without spending so much on channels I don't watch. Thanks.

Not all channels are in HD unfortunately - although you'll find that MOST flames games are . You need a shaw HD Receiver in order to view HD channels though, which you'll have to buy/rent-to-own.

The picture is grainy and blurry because you are using regular cable most likely.

You need an HD Reciever and the HD television package from your cable company to actually recieve high defintion video on your TV otherwise your fancy TV is just blowing up the low resolution SD cable signal.

You'll need to buy a $150-$250 HD reciever from Shaw and then pay for the proper HD channel package to actually recieve HD video. Standard cable will always look like crap on an HDTV, there is no much you can do.

The two previous posters are correct. A friend of mine got a flat screen TV and I asked "so are you going to get HD". And he said "nope - we've got digital" (which is simply standard def, and it looked kind of fuzzy). And he also had his X Box hooked up using the old yellow, red, and white plugs. In a way it kind of negated having a decent TV as the picture is only as good as the signal it is receiving. Eventually he figured out why stuff at my house was sharper and made the change, and now he can't believe it took him so long to make the switch.

I think that the HD package on Shaw (not including movies, HBO, etc.) is about $9 per month more. That gives you the main networks in HD (Canadian and American), Sportsnet, TSN, TSN2, The Score, and a handfull of other channels like Discovery, National Geographic, etc. Most of the HD channels are just HD versions of channels that your current cable package already has, but you'll really notice the difference.

Once you get the HD box, go and grab and HDMI cable to hook it up. It carried the video signal plus the audio, so it is nice and convenient. If you do gaming, you should hook your console up with one too. Don't get the $100 fancy dancy ones from Monster that Best Buy insists that you need. I got a 2 pack of 6' Philips from Costco and it was about $30, but you can probably find them cheaper. They look great.

Edit: I also believe that the Shaw HD box comes with one HDMI cable, so maybe open it up before you go home just to make sure. You may not need to buy one at all.

When I look to see whats on TV (Shaw) I start at the 200's (HD Channels) if nothing is on those channels I probably won't watch anything. Nothing drives me more insane than coming home to see my wife watching TLC in standard definition when the exact same show is on HD.
