According to "mac" people I know the easiest thing to do is to do a restore then upgrade.

I dont know the process of how to do a restore or whether you have to back everything up first or not (I assume it asks you first if you want to backup).

Rumors are coming out that Verizon might get the new iPhone in January.

Which will be after Apple has all these issues fixed, and holy crap that will be an amazing release.

1.7 million units sold in 3 days will be chicken scratch if Verizon gets it.

I will believe it when I see it.

From Apples point of view if you are making crazy margin with every iphone sold on AT&T network then why would you give that up. I cant see Verizon doing a deal anywhere close to what AT&T gives apple/month/phone because they wouldnt have it exclusively.

Well it certainly can't hurt iPhone sales either. Look at up here, Telus, Bell and Rogers all carry the iPhone. Verizon will have some kind of deal, by picking up the iPhone they'll attract a fair amount of customers.

I know plenty of people who want an iPhone in the States and won't simply because they refuse to go to AT&T.

In Canada they dont have to physically make a different phone.

All the phones are the same as Telus/Bell HSPA chipset is already in the iphone that rogers sells.

Verizon you need another sku and if I have learned anything, Apple hates lots of sku's. The only bonus for Apple would be increased app iadd sales. However it has been reported (i dont personally believe it but) that apple barely makes any money off the 30% they take from app.

I dont see Verizon giving them a deal, I see Verizon saying we will sell your phone on our netwrok subsidized like every other phone we sell. Applie might prefer that as they are a hardware maker but who knows. Thinks with the stock price are going well, I dont see a need to rock the boat.

An entirely new phone.. okay, that's different then. =P Maybe Apple's decided it's worth the extra SKU if any of the rumors are true? Who knows.

I did hear that on Verizon's network you can't do voice and data at the same time. Might complicate things...

Anyone else having problems using location services after the upgrade to iOS4? I can't use any location services now. If I go into the setting to change it, location services is on, all the apps under the main switch are off, and all the switches are grayed out and unswitchable.

Any ideas?

Endgadget is debunking this as fast as Macrumors is reporting it: http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/30/d...enna-issue-pr/

It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out. I guess this is one advantage of having to wait for it in Canada.

Anandtech with some interesting analysis of the reception issues:
http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/30/...ength-dropoff/

Quote:
Anandtech points out that in their testing they found the iPhone 4 antenna is indeed improved over the 3GS -- adding validity to Apple's previous statements. In their testing, Anandtech found that at very low signal strengths (down to -113), the iPhone 4 would hold onto calls far better than the iPhone 3GS.

It's amazing really to experience the difference in sensitivity the iPhone 4 brings compared to the 3GS, and issues from holding the phone aside, reception is absolutely definitely improved. I felt like I was going places no iPhone had ever gone before. There's no doubt in my mind this iPhone gets the best cellular reception yet, even though measured signal is lower than the 3GS.

Also, it looks like Apple is beefing up their RF staff...

Quote:
The eight job listings comprise three separate job titles, with the most relevant being three "Antenna Engineer - iPad/iPhone" positions. The three listings, all posted on June 23rd, are looking for individuals with a high level of qualification including 10+ years of experience in RF technology and a preference for PhD-level training.

Responsibilities: Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices. The candidate should be able to design antennas suitable for wireless handheld devices with excellent radiation performance, including TRP, TIS, SAR, and EMC. Work closely with other RF and antenna design engineers, mechanical and industrial designers, and EMC engineers to integrate the antenna design in our products.

Also posted on June 23rd were two listings for "iPhone OTA Wireless Systems Engineer" to focus on validation of antenna radiation performance. And just one week earlier, the company posted three listings for " RF Systems Validation Engineer iPhone" positions also focused on testing the iPhone's RF systems, noting that "as we add more and more capabilities to the iPhone, testing the radios becomes more and more complex."

Cnet saying antenna problem a 'physics' problem, not a software problem.

It’s almost like its not that the iPhone 4 has issues, but more like it operates correctly over a much wider range of signal strengths, and as a result, the range of values displayed by the 5 bar signal display is much wider, so it climbs and drops over a far wider range than people are used to seeing.

It’s well known that the “5 bar display” is doctored on many phones, and also that Apple uses that display to report actual DB’s, as opposed to “relative” signal strength - I remember even on the iPhone 1 this was an area of concern/confusion for people.

Nobody is talking about sensitivity in any of this either - it could very well be that the iPhone 4 works just fine down to 1 bar, so they aren’t afraid to show the lower signal strength because they know the phone will continue to handle calls.
