Just because a lot of people play it doesn't mean its exciting to watch. I like playing chess... but watching it would be a real snooze fest.
Not saying the soccer can't be exciting to watch... it can be... for brief intermittent moments... but unfortunately those are far and few between.... in an outdoor soccer match.
Lets face it... the field of play is way too big and most of the game happens away from the goal net.... which makes it kind of boring. If you've got to be a soccer expert to really enjoy watching the game, it loses right there. An exciting sport to watch is any sport that anybody (expert or not) can really get into because the action is "on the edge of your seat" type action and the final result of the game can change at anytime/any moment. Soccer is not that.
Or if Canada is in it.

I mean... what's so exciting about a 90 minute game which ends in a 1-0 score?
Not sure why half the world is so crazy about it. Obviously most soccer fans have never seen a hockey game.

Not really sure but I suspect it isn't very many. Just a lot of running up and down the field, a lot of players falling in agony every time somebody comes within 2 ft of them,
Basically not a lot happening.
The only real excitement is when somebody gets a free kick and a bunch of players from the opposing team all stand in front of the net trying to block the shot and cover their nuts at the same time.... sheesh.
You can't watch soccer and expect to see what you see in hockey like high shots on net, body checks, blocked shots, penalty minutes. The same goes for soccer fans watching hockey for the first time.
They're very different sports and you can't love any of them unless you learn more about them.
Trust me soccer fans in South America think hockey makes no sense, but they're not exposed to it so you can't blame them.
Most sports in North America are fast, exciting and brutal. So here it's fun to watch punches and hits and 100 MPH shots.
Soccer fans enjoy the build up of nice play, the quality of each player and the fact they can go and imitate what soccer players do almost anywhere.
There's a reason it's the most popular sport in the WORLD. Don't knock it like Nascar fans knock Formula 1 because they don't race in ovals.
Ok that's pretty funny, even though I completely disagree with the "in basketball something happens" part. While that purely would get old, a bit of defense would be nice to add to the sport.

I'd like to see them do an opposite as well. End to end goal after goal on a soccer field, with the last 2 minutes taking 10 minutes and being full of intentional fouls and free kicks. How exciting that game would be!
These arguments about "Oh it actually hurts quite a bit because you don't have pads", are just silly. First of all, don't these guys wear shin pads? And isn't that exactly where they all grab as soon as they go down?
Secondsly watch ANY rugby game (including 8 year olds) and you'll see a bunch of guys wearing no pads who get hit WAY harder than any soccer player several times throughout the game. I'll bet you can count on less than 1 finger the number of guys you see rolling around clutching a body part, only to get up as soon as a penalty is awarded.

For the record, both these guys finished their games (though I'm only assuming in Beckham's case)
I'd say one of two things can explain this.
1) Soccer players are a bunch of divers
2) Yellow/Red cards have some sort of magical healing powers that really should be looked into.

Let me add Spain to my hit list of teams I want out.
That Spain/Chile game yesterday was brutal in the second half. Spain played pass the whole time, and Chile stopped pressing, content with the 1 goal loss.
Portugal
Spain
Argentina
Paraguay
Can all go home anytime. It would be better for the sport's image if the winning team was a hard charging honest team, not a bunch of faking pussies.
It was a brutal second half but you can't blame Chile. I'm their biggest supporter and they needed to equalize or else face the possibility of being eliminated, but that's very difficult to do over 45 minutes when you are down a man the whole time, and Chile even did score.
Look at hockey, how many teams shut it down and make many games unbearable when they have a lead? It's not just football where it's done.
OK. I just need Spain and annoying David Villa out, to make things right with the world. I still think the Germans are going to continue peaking, and win it all.
