Porn sites get their own domain: '.xxx'

(CNN) -- It's a big day for the porn industry.
On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet's naming system, approved the controversial ".xxx" top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.
The domain will be applied to adult entertainment sites just as ".com" is now.
The .xxx internet suffix, which was first proposed six years ago by ICM Registry, a group that sells domain names, "will provide a place online for adult entertainment providers and their service providers who want to be part of our voluntary self regulatory community," according to that company's news release.
Adopting .xxx will be optional. However, some tech blogs speculate a push to make the domain mandatory for adult-only sites.
ICM Registry has already taken 110,000 pre-reservations for the domain, which will be available in early 2011, if not sooner, its news release states.

It'll be interesting to see what large corporations do with their .xxx domains. Most will probably just redirect but some of the more edgy companies might try to have some fun with it.

I think it's good for porn sites to all "have" to use the .xxx; this will make it easier for parents to filter and monitor their kids activities.

I don't however like different endings to sites. If it's not a .com I'm less likely to remember it.
.net, .ca, .org,
I actually do like .edu though because if I reference it in one of my papers, it makes it seem more credible than a simple .com

This was one of the ideas behind the original proposal for a .xxx tld. The porn industry itself was very much in favour, but a bunch of busybodies quashed it the first time because they were afraid it would make it too easy for kids to find porn.
