I don't understand why people think that Newman should even try and play out the season, working around his personal issues on the side. If the guy is retiring clearly his heart is elsewhere at the moment. If he even tried to play, it's pretty apparent that he wouldn't be the same player he was the past few years - at this level of sports if your heart isn't entirely in the game you're not going to do what you need to to be successful.
Exactly where did I state that I wanted Newman to play any part of the season?

My issue was with a poster sitting on his high horse telling us we aren't aloud to question the timing of his decision.

He then compared Newman's situation to that of Barrick Nealy, which are totally different.

You are right, both have every right to retire, both don't have football as their #1 priority. I don't have, nor have I ever had any issue with that.

Pagal, I wasn't telling you anything. My point was people act like clowns when they know nothing of another person's situation and rip the guy cuz he's a local pro-athlete. Just because they are a fan of this team they criticize, with full rights to do so, even after someone with inside insight couldn't appeal to their reason. To me, informed opinions are most valuable.

In fact, I was calling people like them jokes since the argument I supplied had little effect upon their perspective. I gave them the chance to see it this way, they didn't and I got sour. I called them jokes and you took offense for them and tried to come to their rescue. They play the role of typical critic with no one to be accountable to and I made a stand. You call it a high horse, and I call you an internet hero, coming to the aid of the internet clown. And I basically said football wasn't his #1 priority, in so many subtle words, but you still tried to have it out with me on those two critics behalf. Did I steal your lunch money one time?

to me as people they both grade out as similar, Nealy and Newman. You feel the need to value CFL draft picks as to NFL picks. That isn't the case and regarding the current CFL economic environment, retirements are common place. Nealy wasn't a starter but he was our best back up option. He didn't have great accuracy but he was a great athlete that could really break big plays with big time potential. Newman was a starter and knew he had a job, but he didn't want to let his issues affect his last year of his rookie deal and end up in a tough situation after guys like Labatte with Winnipeg got a big extension. Labatte was from the same draft class as Newman and Soup. Oneil got a big extension this last summer and that probably was weighing on his mind. I don't understand how a line get's more criticism than the heir apparent quaterback just because he was a high, CFL draft pick. His heart wasn't in it, you should be lauding his decision to not deliver a half assed effort for your entertainment value.

If i'm the Stamps, Newman never plays another game for another team in the CFL until his contract expires even if he sits his ass in the stands for the remainder of it.

You can stomp your feet all you want Ziggy, but each passing week Newman's looking more and more like an ass. If he wanted a trade, the honorable thing to do would have been to request so the Stamps could have atleast got some value for him.

Nice come from behind win up in Edmonton tonight. Sure its only preseason but from all accounts the young guys played well. Both Drew Tate and Zac Champion played really well at QB but the Stamps are expected to sign Cody Pickett as early as tomorrow according to Al Cameron.

By the way, according to the people I talk to, there have been no discussions with the Stamps with regards to a possible trade of Jesse Newman. His status remains what it was last week. He is retired and nobody knows exactly why.

I will see what he has to say about that. If those are his motives, which i'm sure are not according to the last time I talked with him, then that would be a real sly and surreptitious move on his part. I agree, but I promise if that's his intention, I will share it here first. Until then, he isn't looking more and more like an a$$. Rather, He looks comfortable and like a former grey cup champion.

Sounds like PK Sam's inury could cost him a spot on the opening day roster. Along with the injury receiver Jermaine Jackson has had an excellent camp. Final preseason game of the year goes tomorrow afternoon vs the Riders.

Stamps beat the Riders, 41-17
sounds like Burris and Durant both had good games, Maver and Congi both kicked well, and the Stamps OL protected the QBs decently.
Pickett threw 2 TDs

I didn't watch the game, but I wonder if Keels has done enough to warrant a spot with the team: he had one outstanding catch last week, and this week it looks like he was a solid receiver and did great on kick and punt returns. Still, breaking into the CFL as an import receiver is so tough.

Also had a bad drop though and is a pretty small guy.

He's in tough to make it I think.

After that Saskatchewan pre-season game, expect to see K Warren Kean gets traded or release outright. Maver definitely beat him on that spot. I also think QB Zac Champion went down on the QB depth after Cody Pickett's play vs Sask. R Jermaine Jackson will be a shoo-in and I think the Stamps will keep both Kruger and Kelly. On DL, I am not sure if some of the rookies will beat out the veterans. I really think the Stamps will keep the likes of Keon Raymond and Milton Collins because they can play the other position. Juwan Simpson seems like a lock on MLB until Robert Mc something comes back. Dixon is going to be a tough cut because he is a ballhawk and very aggressive. SO I think he'll have a spot. John Eubanks might be in trouble though for the veterans. It is going to be an interesting few days for Hufnagel. He will have some tough decisions to make.

Matt Sheridan comeback has ended quickly as he came to camp weighing 383 pounds. It was "weighing" him down.

Other CFL news Shannon James has been cut again this time by Hamilton.

Jason Carter got bite in the butt by the ratio as he was cut by Toronto.

Mark DeWit a Calgary native has been cut by Toronto. There may be some relief here for Calgary.

Mark's a Centre....I think we are good to go at that position, and by the looks of it I think we are set on the O' Line, barring injury.

True, I am a big supporter of an all-Canadian O-Line so any Canadian O-Line talent you can get - you get.

Why not move him to another position. I also believe the more Canadian talent you have the better.

Another retirement on the O-Line for Calgary. Sam Allen a candidate to start at right tackle has retired he was only 24.

Calgary Stampeders head coach/general manager John Hufnagel has announced the release of the following players:
  • Non-import kicker Warren Kean
  • Non-import fullback Guillaume Senecal
  • Import receiver Jonathan Lowe
  • Import receiver Xavier Glenn
  • Import defensive lineman Jae Thaxton
  • Import defensive lineman Darrell Robertson
  • Import defensive lineman Eugene Kinlaw
  • Import defensive lineman Tim Hunt
  • Import defensive back John Eubanks
  • Import defensive back Jason Horton
  • Import defensive back Chris Bowens
  • Import linebacker Greg Trent
  • Import quarterback Zac Champion
  • Import running back Derek Watson
Hufnagel also announced that import offensive lineman Sam Allen has retired from football.

So that means Maver is our kicker. Eubanks is gone, but I wouldn't have thought that coming into the season. Just too many players that played well in that position.

And of course, Cody Pickett will be the #3, which I think we all would have laughed at a week ago. but after his performance on Sunday, he deserves the spot, IMO.
