It's nervy to ask for a seat like that. It sounds like she announced it like she was entitled. You can't say no though because you would look bad. This is a rare occurence so I wouldn't worry about it.

You impress the hot 24 year old woman on the train when you give up your seat to the 50 year old woman.

Last time I offered to give up a seat to an old lady she yelled at me. So I stopped.
But will gladly give up a seat if asked.

Here's my thing about this.

I recently had ACL surgery, but you wouldn't know it to look at me, I'm the same age as the OP and in good shape however sometimes when I stand stationary for a long time, my knee really begins to bother me. If I have a seat on the C-Train (I take it every day), I don't give it to anyone else, unless it is an elderly individual or a pregnant woman.

If this lady had asked me to give her my seat, I would have refused, and I would have explained why. Does that make me a bad person? I don't think so.

The truth is you just don't know from looking at someone what their underlying physical condition may be. On the outside I look completely physically healthy, but unless you asked me, you wouldn't know that I had recently had surgery.

Pretty presumptuous of that lady in my opinion. But good on you for not making a big fuss over it bud.

I had the same experience as a couple posters here..

I'm normally a healthy youngish guy, but I broke my foot back in April. As a result, I wore a cast and couldn't drive. I normally bike or run to and from work, so the bus was my only option.

For the four weeks I wore that cast, not once did anyone offer their seat to me. I get on in Inglewood, so there are very rarely seats available. I survived of course, but it always struck me as a pretty disappointing state of affairs.

But after going through that, and even the pain I continued to experience after the cast was off, I would probably give someone the benefit of the doubt that something else could be wrong that makes their life just a little bit easier to sit on the bus/train. Things are not always as they seem.

I think this is missing the point. If this woman had said "I can't stand for long periods, would you mind giving me your seat please?" then I'm sure the OP would have no problem. But if the initial request is done in beeyotch form then it tends to get peoples backs up.

As the old Chinese proverb goes...."Honey catches more flies than vinegar"

EDIT: Oops, just saw the OP clarified on this point on page 3

She may have an ailment that was not immediately visible. I wouldn't think anything of it.

You don't really need to give up your seat for a hot chick. Just leer suggestively and pat your lap.

And they love it when they leave if you reach out and smack em on the butt. the really appreciative ones will give you a sandwich.

This brings up another discussion entirely. What do you do when the transit rider might be pregnant? Could be a baby, or it could be a case of a reasonably sized beer belly.

I would not have given up my seat regardless, I am a jerkwad that way. I am a borderline mysanthropist and have some mental health issues when it comes to people.

I have been taking the train for about 7 years now and I can't recall if someone has ever asked for my seat. But I have given up my seat a bunch of times for elderly people, pregnant ladies, people with children and people who have trouble standing. I get on the train at Shawnessey and ride it south and then north to downtown. I do this so I can get a seat and read. I am not a medieval knight, therefore I do give up my seat to thy train wenches of all ages. If someone asked me for their seat I would give it up for them. Seeing as almost no has asked for my seat in the long while that I have taken the train I would assume that they need it.

However when I used to ride the train at Canyon Meadows there was a women that I saw a bunch of times who would always ask for a seat. She was a middle age women, seemingly in fine health. But just the way she went about things were suspicious. I can't say for sure, but it seems like she wanted a seat because she wanted to sit down, not because she had to.

Most people stand still when the train is coming into the platform and file into the nearest door waiting for people in front of them. This women would bounce along near the yellow line as the train was pulling up and cut in front of people to get into the door first. And she would impolitely ask people for their seats. Both men and women. Well one day is asked an older middle aged man who was reading his newspaper for his seat. And before she answered she started to move as if he would give up his seat, but he didn't. He just flat out said no. The woman was completely flabbergasted. She just froze for a couple seconds and stood the rest of the ride. I figure if there was a reason for her to sit she would have asked someone else.

People put way too many labels for gender. The whole chivalry towards women is BS. Offering a seat, holding open doors, helping someone get a luggage, you should offer help for those in need, not some phantom courtesy norm. If there is only 1 or 2 people behind me, I hold the door open for them regardless of age or gender. If I see someone who probably needs a seat (and assuming I'm not in a grumpy mood) I offer it up, regardless of age or gender. If I see someone struggling to get a heavy bag off the airport carasole (sp?) again I offer help.

That should be the social structure of courtesy and chivalry, not because some male wants to show everyone he's some sort of superman.
