Vancouver Canucks I think. Lots of whining, very little winning.

That's a good comparison. Both won championships, both had some of the very best players (Platini, Zidane, Gretz Messier) both are at the very bottom right now, both have joke of a coach/GM

Yep. And England is the Toronto Maple Leafs. Endlessly hyped but delivers absolutely nothing.

I understand that, but they dont have the same kind of history as the Oilers, and really, in the grand scheme of the competition 1 WC and 2 Euro Cups is pretty tame in comparison to teams that have won 2 or 3 times and who knows how many Euros or various comparables.
Either way, you would compare them to a team that sucks.

How about the Islanders then? TOP team for a short period of time (98 and 2000 titles) and pretty much sucky otherwise (except for the Platini 84 title).
Too bad SA will not advance, at least they're playing football unlike some other usual suspects...

At this tournament. England is probably just happy that France is doing so poorly in SA to distract from what has been a horrible tournament to this point for them too.

Fair enough. France pulls 1 back of course while the feed was down. They will leave this tournament better than the 2002 Tournament, they've now scored a goal.
It is too bad SA will not advance, they are really going for it here and this game has been entertaining.

What? Are we talking about the Portugal that barely qualified through the playoff system after losing their group to Denmark? The Portugal that dominated the Greeks in 2004? The dominant Portugal that drew Estonia and recently the powerhouse Cape Verde? Dont let 1 game fool you, Portugal have been a pretty weak team for a while now, even after nationalizing a few Brazilians to shore up the weaknesses. Sorry man, just a wacky statement, if you cant win your group you're no 'European Powerhouse.'
|
Are you serious Locke? That is just a whacky rebuttal in itself. Portugal has not last at all in it's last 15 international games (3 ties), made it to the 2004 Finals against Greece, 2000 Euro semi-finals, 2008 Euro quarter finals, qualified in the 2000 World Cup, came in 4th at the 2006 World Cup, and are currently out-performing juggernaut Brazil. All of their players are Premier talent playing in the best leagues in Europe, and are currently ranked #3 in the world. And coming second in your group doesn't make you a powerhouse? Most European teams could only hope to come in second in qualifying tournaments. Portugal has a serious shot at winning this 2010 World Cup despite finishing "second" in their group.I'm sorry, but what an incredibly bizarre assessment you've made.

The South American teams look really good.
Their fitness levels seem much better too.
I wouldn't be suprised if 3 of the last 4 come from there.

Portugal has not been good for 4 years. Their qualifying campaign for the World Cup was a disaster.
They're outperforming 'Juggernaut' Brazil? Really? Thats strange because I see 6 points beside Brazil and 4 beside Portugal in the standings. Goals against Korea notwithstanding.
They have talent, I'm not disputing that, their players are all playing in major leagues for big clubs, theres no argument there from me. But as a national side for the last 4 years they have been playing poorly, and they have been exhibiting this poor form against substandard teams.
Coming in second in a group that features Denmark, Sweden, Albania, Hungary and Malta does mean that Portugal is not a 'Powerhouse' by most definitions.
Beating Sweden by 1 point to even get a playoff spot is also pretty telling when your side drops points to Albania, and fails to get results against Sweden and Denmark. Particularly while Portugal is ranked 3rd against some much weaker and lower ranked competition. If you want to really rate the rankings, which I dont particularly, bu there you go.
Your exact same argument could be applied to France, but you wont get me saying that they are a European power. They may have been, they arent now. Thats the thing about Soccer, tournaments only happen every 4 years so getting the same players twice even is pretty tough.

I have a couple of questions for you all.
Is CBC Bold an online channel or does it actually get carried by my satellite provider? I have Bell.
Where is a good place to buy a jersey for my favorite team? Sportchek? Jersey city? Are there official retailers?
Also, why are pretty much all jerseys I see uncrested? That is to say they rarely have a name and number on the back. Is it like the NHL that there are replica jerseys and then authentics? Any ideas on price?
I would like an Italian jersey if it matters.

So here is the breakdown for Group H (let me know if I don't have this right):
Chile - 6 points. +2 GD
Spain - 3 points. +1 GD
Switzerland - 3 points. 0 GD.
If Chile wins, they advance and Switzerland would advance with a win or tie against Honduras. If the Chile wins and the Swiss lose, Spain advances.
If Chile ties, Chile still advances and Spain advances if the Swiss lose or tie. If Chile-Spain tie the Swiss have to win to advance.
If Chile loses, Spain qualifies for sure. If Spain beats Chile (which won't happen), Switzerland needs to beat Honduras by at least 3 to advance in second place.

The Soccer Shop in Willowpark Village is good too.
Bold is carried by Shaw but you have to pay extra for it. I just watched the France game on regular CBC and the Uruguay game on french CBC. Dual TV's FTW!

Nice to see the French out, now I'd like to see England and Spain follow suit.
