I think he was saying ENG is in the second tier of favorites.

That would be the most likely interpretation.

As much hope there is here for the national side to do well, the vast majority of people are realistic about their chances of World Cup success - the media notwithstanding.

Unfortunately in this case your analysis fails the litmus test because not only have England won the World Cup, but made the semi-finals in 1990 and the semi-finals in the 1996 European Championships. While it is not a great pedigree, it is much better than the majority of football-playing nations. Hence my earlier comment about broad based generalizations.

And judging by the betting shops here, England's odds to win the World Cup were 9/1, behind Spain, Brazil and the Argies, which by my calculations would mean they were fourth favourites to win. But as my good friend rubecube pointed out yesterday, my math skills are poor at best.
Meh, the 1966 World Cup has been discussed. Take pride in a WCF game winning goal that never actually crossed the line if you must. You're right though, it isn't fair to say that they sucked in every tournament. They did win once, no matter how tainted that victory may be. Since then they have sucked. Plain and simple.

I'm not sure that that is what he said, but if so, then that makes a lot more sense. My apologies if the media has taken a realistic approach to this team for once.

I'm really at a loss to understand the completely apathetic approach most of the English players have taken to the last two games. Capello needs to have his head checked for leaving Heskey on as long as he did, and bringing SWP on for Lennon. I can sort of understand bringing Lennon off, despite the fact he created England's two best chances, for someone like Joe Cole, but SWP? WTF?!!

Well, How about the taddle Telling on the German squad about the argentinian fight deal so Frings couldn't play vs them?

I just wish all their players knew the Italian national anthem.

Does that constitute a dive?

World Cup goes to the ones who win. It doesn't say to the ones who win fairly.

One fantastic thing if England crashes out in the group stage - the papers will provide solid entertainment for months!

It drove me nuts seeing Lennon deliver a beautiful cross that the Algerian nicked out for a corner only to see him having to trot off to be replaced by SWP. Frig. I fully expected to be seeing Joe Cole. How frustrating.

Something is not right with this though. France dives during the 2006 World Cup final and gets a penalty kick because of it and people say that Italy "dove to glory"? Someone help me out with this because no one has ever been able to explain to me how they dove to anything.

Holy shinguard, enough with the diving crap. Can't we just talk about the games going on? Let's use this thread for new, relevant discussion.

Irrelevant. Just use Patrick Roy's rings in ears line.

Italy says Malouda dived
France says Materazzi's chest doesn't really hurt
Germany says Italy rattle on Frings
Portugal says France never should have gotten a penalty and Ronaldo was hacked at all day.
England say there are the kings of the world.
Argentina hates England
Brazil are fun don't care enough to win
Spain are fun but always choke cause of players girlfriends.

Death, Taxes. Welcome to the World Cup

Fair enough. Any predictions about tomorrow's matches? Think Netherlands could be the next giant to fall?

thats the biggest problem I had all game, Capello made a like for like move when it was clear the formation wasn't working

and it didn't work against the US either

hope he goes 4-5-1 next match, they need more control in midfield and Rooney should be told to play striker

I was really surprised to see how deep Rooney was playing in his own end. That can't be part of Capello's strategy.
