It's not the religion. It is the culture that these people come from.

Recent trial in Montreal
An honour crime in some cultures implies the "notion that if somebody tries to bring dishonour to the family, that person should be eliminated in order to restore the name of the family back, or restore the honour back," said psychiatrist Dr. Amin Muhammad of Memorial University in St. John's.
"If their children would adopt the western ways of life, that would come in direct conflict with their own cultural mindset and their own perceived norms," he said.
Muhammad, whose area of expertise is transcultural psychology, said this is the 13th case documented in Canada. According to the United Nations, 5,000 women are killed in such incidents each year, he said

My dad's family is of Catholic Palestinian origin, and while I gather that Muslim-Christian relationships in Palestine are reasonably peaceful and that they/'we' are a united people, even along with our Jewish Arab cousins who choose to ally themselves with us and take pride in their Arabic heritage, I have been occasionally seen some serious anti-Muslim sentiment, largely in reaction to barbaric honour killings in Muslim families. While these are very rare in Mediterranean Arabia compared to South Asian countries (there, amongst Hindus and Sikhs as well, mind), they still happen, and the reaction from non-Muslims in Palestine is always very strong.

What am I supposed to say here? I'm not WASP, so I probably have some PC leeway. I dunno, I just think we ought to screen immigrants and refugees better. I keep hearing, oh, the paranoia over Muslim treatment of women is ridiculous, but then I hear from family still in the West Bank about even there and in Lebanon etc. where there is a lot more liberalism etc. about how Muslims treat the women in their families.

Muslims, not Islamists.

I have no issues whatsoever with women wearing the hijab, fine, if they wish to. The burka is flat-out stupid. The burka is banned in the major mosques in Saudi Arabia, ffs! It's just traditional dress.

and the fact is, I don't hear about a lot of Arabs committing this sort of crime. I don't even hear about Iranis committing this sort of crime.

It's always Pakistanis, Afghans, and sometimes Indians. I'm surprised I don't hear about Saudis doing such things.

I lived in the Arabian Gulf for a while and we had a housemaid who told us all sorts of stories about how life was for her in uneducated, poor rural India. My experience with Indians has largely been positive, but I can't think of any reason why we should expect poor South Asians and Afghanis who have barely been exposed to Western culture, truly, to be able to assimilate without a massive struggle happening.

I have personally witnessed here in Canada countless examples of public mistreatment of women by South Asian and Afghani Muslim men, and by Saudi men. To tell the truth, I have also seen Sikhs mistreat their wives and daughters in public. What goes on behind closed doors must be even worse.

While Arabic culture has many great strides to take to be free from the grip of sickening Wahhabist Islam, it is not as gripped by it as the South Asians are.

I hope I'm not being racist, but I don't even know anymore. All I know is that I really hate seeing women of any nationality or colour being so mistreated, and until I start seeing more examples of Pakistanis and Afghans, recent immigrants and refugees I mean, who do assimilate and don't pit themselves against the West, I am going to continue to question why the hell we ought to not introduce extra consideration in screening these particular applicants, and in the meantime allow more European, Latino, Arab, certain African, and East Asian immigrants in.

From studying Arabic and therefore also Islamic history, I've found that by and large the actual religion of Islam does not condone much of the mistreatment women endure for 'religious' reasons. The problem is still the religion, though. Why? Because for literally centuries sheikhs and just everyday folk have been finding ways to fit the cultural traditions of certain groups into the mold of Islam. The male chauvinistic but not misogyinst religion of Islam therefore becomes, in particular regions, not only oppressive to women, but simply sickeningly hateful of them. I have not seen greater evidence of this coming from anywhere other than Pakistan and Afghanistan.

You don't change an animal's stripes by painting it (in this case in red and white). Why anyone would expect an obvious sicko like this girl's father to change his views when arriving in Canada is beyond me?

Yeah, I know social engineering is dangerous, but I don't think there's anything wrong with making sure that people, you know, don't think killing their daughters for dressing normally, before letting them in.

I know that 'religion is poison' is a juvenile sentiment, and am intellectually beyond that in my thinking, but on a purely gut, emotional level, I can't help but think, oh my god, what a sick and horrible world we live in where people do things like this to please their sky fairy of choice.

Given that in the Agreed Upon Statement of Facts for the trial, the father and brother both arrived in Canada after appealing for -- and subsequently receiving -- refugee status, a revocation of said status, Canadian citizenship, and a deportation back to Pakistan is a fair punishment.

There HAD to be a reason why he would've sought refugee status to get into Canada. I say, take it away.

OR...

Stand them naked in separate rooms, bind their hands together, and either
a) Let loose a bunch of pigs into the room , or
b) Purchase a bunch of slaughtered pigs, and pelt them with the gore.

Unfortunately, that would constitute Cruel and Unusual punishment.

And now for something completely different

A Racially charged joke:

Parvinder and Habib are pandhandlers.

They panhandle in different areas of Calgary.

Habib panhandles just as long as Parvinder but only collects 2 to 3 dollars
every day.

Parvinder brings home a suitcase FULL of $10 bills, drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage-free house and has a lot of money to spend.

Habib says to Parvinder 'I work just as long and hard as you do, but how do you bring home a suitcase full of $10 bills every day?'

Parvinder says, 'Look at your sign, what does it say?'

Habib's sign reads 'I have no work, a wife and 6 kids to support.'

Parvinder says 'No wonder you only get $2-3 dollars'

Habib says... 'So what does your sign say'?

Parvinder shows Habib his sign. It reads:

'I only need another $10 to move back to Pakistan'.
