The problem is that there's at least half a dozen of those types of videos when you type in "David James" in the youtube search bar.

Hmm interesting, didn't know that. However, I'm confident Spain will impress tmrw. In the last friendly, couple days before the World Cup started they beat Poland 6-0.

Ronaldo upset with the ref from today's game:

Quote:
The Portugal skipper later said: "Sometimes it's difficult that the referee doesn't give fouls because he thinks I dived. I know the game is very quick and the players are very quick, but sometimes I don't understand the decisions of referees.

"I respect them, but sometimes I don't agree because they don't protect the dangerous players. In the first half, someone tackled me and I was given a yellow card. I didn't do anything, but he gave me a yellow card.

What did you see to warrant a yellow card on that play?? He was fouled(even the panelists called it a foul) and was upset at the non call and the defender got up in his face. There was some chirping and brief bump by the Ivorian, then the ref came and gave them both yellows. Didn't make a lot of sense to me either. Ronaldo is just upset about the yellow. His reputation was the reason for the non call, I get that, but still, the yellow was a bit harsh. That would have been the perfect opportunity to pull both players aside and tell them to cool it and let em go. It happens all the time.

Call me bias, call me a homer, call me whatever, I thought Ronaldo did fine today. I can recall only one blatant dive and in this world of soccer, that's pretty damn good. People like to single him out as the psoster boy of diving and that's unfair. He does it just as much as anyone else. That doesn't make it right, but it's the nature of the game. Sure, the case can be made that it shouldnt be the nature of he game, and I would absolutely agree, but it undoubtedly is. Don't like it, don't watch.

All right-thinking folk hate Ronaldo. I counted at least 6 times he went down in today's match, and I can guarantee he will go down at least that many times in the next match.

Maybe he has a reputation as a diver because he goes down at even the most incidental contact? Does he perhaps have some kind of inner ear problem that causes him to lose balance so much more often than every other player on the pitch?

Diving as a whole aside, he has a well earned reputation. Instead of being taken aside and being asked to cool it, he was warned (cautioned) to do the same. He took NO heed of the caution and went along his merry diving way, what good would a word of warning to 'cool it' do? A yellow card was obviously ineffective.

More calls went his way than against him, he has no right to complain. And if one that should have gone his way didnt, then you can count it against the number of calls that have gone his way but shouldnt have.

Ronaldo should keep his mouth shut and his feet on the ground.

I won't call you a homer or bias but Burrows and company take hints from Ronaldo's diving. The guy gets a tug and acts like he was shot with a tank. Just like how Burrows gets heat on Fire and Ice Roro will get here. Gust of wind knocks him over while he grabs his ankle.

If he were the only one that did it, I would understand the hate. And if you're specifically looking for Ronaldo's dives, then you are going to see things a little bit differently. In super slow HD motion, it looks a lot worse than it is. These guys are going at full speed, and a slight knock could easily make you fall to the ground. Ronaldo is no different than a vast majority of players. Singling him out is unfair. What he does is not always right, but he sure as hell is not alone.

The theatrics of players is the only thing that gets to me. Clutching a knee or a face when they weren;t even hit there is embarassing.

The yellow wasn't for the "dive", it was for the extra crap after the play had moved on.

And maybe more calls went his way then against him because....now let's see if you can wrap your head around this......HE GETS FOULED A LOT!!! He is a dangerous player and any person would half a brain would say that. Messi gets fouled a lot. All the big name players who see the ball a lot are going to be subject to harsher tackles and a higher number of them. I can't imagine this is lost on you. But then again.......

Soccer is easily by a mile the most popular sport in the world. I highly doubt they find it 'troublesome' that average North Americans just don't get it.

Yeah, except guys like Messi and Rooney don't dive to make a play. I watched Messi get fouled about half a dozen times during Argentina's game, but instead of going down immediately and acting like he'd been shot, he tried to play through the foul to make the play.

Replace "Ronaldo" with "Burrows," and "soccer" with "hockey," re-read your paragraph and tell me it still sounds reasonable.

Are you equating diving in hockey to diving in soccer?? Please, apples and oranges bud.

I would think it may be of concern if they want to grow the game...you know...in North America.

There's diving in soccer, and it's certainly worse than most other sports, I agree. Some players are worse than others for sure. Seeing Didier Drogba live was...painful.

That said, there are some dirty dirty tactics that players use. Having talked to someone who's been told what you learn in national team camp (and this isn't an Orange Julius guy, this is a legitimate source, and considering I live in Calgary, is probably an easy guess). Even stuff as underhanded as when you help a player back up, dig a thumb and index finger between his thumb and index finger. Brilliant. Seems like you're helping him up, and you're just making things worse.

There are a lot of underhanded dirty tricks, and also considering the lack of equipment these guys wear, it sometimes seems much worse than it is. If you get kicked on the outside of the knee with no gear, even if there's no actual injury, that's gonna hurt like hell for a minute.

Many sports bore me.

Basketball
Baseball
Nascar
Golf (which I still won't even call a sport)

I don't post in their threads, because I don't care...but I recommend if you're ever in Europe during the season, go catch a live game of a top league in England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France...hell even Scotland, Russia, Holland. Even if you don't enjoy the game, there's no way you can't enjoy the atmosphere, and be simply in awe at how important this simple game is to people outside of English North America.

As said above, the MLS is doing just fine. As must be TV numbers of overseas leagues. The last champions league final was played on a Saturday, which was done exclusively for people on our land mass, so that more people would be able to watch it. They clearly see money in it here.

The MLS is doing it very right. They won't in our lifetimes (or maybe ever) eclipse many sports which are well established in North America, but the salary cap is there, with the one exemption, typically used on an over the hill player anyhow. That player brings in the people by celebrity status, and isn't good enough to destroy the opposition on their own. The league stays fair, and the stars in their twilight are happy, and the fans show up. I can't wait until Portland is in next year. They will eclipse all as the best fans in the league.

Agreed. Even though I liked soccer beforehand. After watching Chelsea and Manchester United play at Wembley last August it took it to another level for me. Atmosphere was incredible, better than any other live sport I've seen.
