Well it is iTunes. It is running over my wireless N network to the Apple TV though, but I wouldn't think that would be much of a bottleneck. Perhaps my Shaw connection is the problem...

Even on a mid-range plan with Telus, the most I ever had to wait was a couple minutes. When I was on Shaw's 15MBs plan, the wait was just mere seconds. I'm strictly talking HD, of course. I would never pay money for an SD version of anything.

I just ran that now. But last time I tested it I swear I got 3 Mb/s download. I'll have to rent another movie and test it again.

Yeah, I rent HD movies on my Apple tv quite often and the wait is generally 15-30 seconds before I can start watching. Something's wrong if you have to wait 40 freakin' minutes.

Which is exactly why it failed. It was the easy target to shut down.

I have a tetrabite external hard drive I want to hook up to a new Airport Extreme router and am planning on getting Apple TV, which should let me stream absolutely everything wirelessly to my TV. This is very attractive to me and am about two weeks away from wanting to buy all this fun stuff!

I like my apple products as much as the next guy, macbook, ipad, ipod...but can someone quickly explain to me what exactly apple tv is? I have never really understood it.

It's a way to display your iTunes content and photos on your TV. It plugs into your tv and then talks wirelessly to your iTunes and pulls in the music, tv shows or movies you have in it.

It is the same as the O!Play and WD HD TV media players, with the added bonus (if you use that kind of thing) of being able to order the content directly from itunes on the TV. The other 2 types require you to download it to your PC and then watch it on the TV.

I don't know how Apple TV handles different media formats but my O!Play has handled everything I have thrown at it, including all my purchased from iTunes stuff.

It doesn't, and anybody thinking of getting one should take note of this. Music will be fine because 99% of it is mp3, but when it comes to movies/tv you need to be careful. If you get all of your media through itunes you'll be totally fine. If you get your media through less legal channels like piracy or digitizing your own dvd collection, you'll need to convert the files before they'll play. Not a huge obstacle as there are free converters, but if that's something that concerns you the apple tv may not be for you.

I purchased seasons 1 thru 10 of E.R. on DVD.
The rest I purchased on iTunes.

A friend has been borrowing the DVDs and has now just finished season 10 and wants to view the rest. Can I move season 11 to an Apple TV and let him borrow that? Or is there an easier way to accomplish this?

Another approach, depending on how good a friend this is, is to set up a RISA - the Reciprocal iTunes Sharing Agreement

You are allowed five machine authorizations, so a buddy and I allow each other’s machines to authorize and play each other’s content. Works well assuming you trust them enough not to start buying stuff on your account (since they need to know your iTunes password).

Once you’ve done this, you can just copy files back and forth on an external drive or file sharing or whatever.

But lending out an entire AppleTV is a great idea too - just preload it with the content and away you go.
