Although. Now that I think about it, I might just offer him $500 for his wife's old MacBook that he and I both know she isn't going to even look at anymore, once she has an iPad...

That's not a bad plan. My friend is likely going to sell me his Macbook for even less (it's four years old) since he's used it maybe twice since getting the iPad.. at US launch.

One of the funniest parts of the whole story is the lead image...
No, not because of the tired maxi pad tie-in... but because, again, it was AT&T's website that was hacked.
Edit: Putting that aside, this could get interesting. Sure, for everyone in the know, Gawker has all the credibility of The National Enquirer... but now that they have an axe to grind against Apple, and are obviously firing up their grinders, how does this whole thing play out? When was the last time something like this happened? I mean, besides Bicycle Bruce and the Flames...
|
I think you are being a little too sensitive. I posted a video giving a warning about a i-pad, AT&T security breach and you go on about shooting the messenger (Gawker). Gawker wasn't the group that found the breach, they only reported it.

Clearly you don't realize how bias Gawker is when it comes to Apple now.

Well I'll take your word for it as I've never heard of Gawker.
The only question that I ask is, did it happen or didn't it?

It was an AT&T security breach, but Gawker is reporting it as an iPad breach. iPads weren't hacked, AT&T was. It wasn't even done using an iPad. The only way iPads are related to this story, is that they stole email addresses of people who have registered iPads with AT&T.
Perhaps you should read up on some of the Gawker/Apple stuff that's happened in the last year, if you're unaware of the entire issue.
(And I'm not being sensitive about anything. Facts are facts.)

Wow, that's really really terrible, it sounds like a real soap opera but I'm not interested in getting involved. So the upshot is that AT&T got hacked and it only involved i-pads, but it had nothing to do with the i-pad?

Typing on the one my wife brought home last night, it's awesome. Downloaded the MLB app and was actually going to attempt a book on this thing but was disappointed in the lack of a store, any updates on when the book store will open?

I'm curious if Apple had any involvement in the development of the iPad registration part of things that got breached. They seem to try to lock down their systems so much, especially their mobile platforms, in the name of preserving their vision of what the ideal 'user experience' is, it would not surprise me if they at the very least looked it over and approved it. Or would they leave something as important and basic as authenticating and registering their device completely to other companies? That really seems to go against their whole company philosophy.

Very annoying isn't it? I'm saddened to see the bookstore pretty much empty at this point. On the upside the Kindle app is fantastic, it offers free samples as well, has more books and they are often cheaper. It is missing one of my favorite features though which is dictionary support.

Looks like some Gutenberg but not many. The "Top Charts" section ends at 120. Not sure if that's the limit of the chart or the full catalog.
Yep they're all there. Corrected by Art Vandelay.

I'll check tonight when I am home have access to my US iTunes account. Still there seemed to be far, far, far more in Kindle than in iTunes. For example, I want to re-read "The Chrysalids" by John Wyndham.
Book: $8.99 at Chapters
Kindle: $7.99
iTunes bookstore: not available
I would have thought the Kindle version would be cheaper given that they don't have to pay for the physical materials. I may choose to actually buy the physical book.

BTW - Something really bad happened to my iPad last week.
Over the past month I was very happy with the battery life. I'd fully charge it at night, watch some "Outer Limits" on the way to work, bring it to meetings to type up notes, play Scrabble on the way home, and still be at 92%.
Then, starting on Tuesday, it was constantly going down into the 50s. 58% on Tuesday, 51% Wednesday and 54% yesterday. So this morning I rebooted the thing and after half a day I'm sitting at 100%. So the reboot seems to have fixed whatever happened. But I don't like that... something is kinda buggy in there. Having to reboot every so often is a Microsoft thing....

It's a real shame too. If ebooks were nice and cheap, I'd buy an ebook reader in a heartbeat and probably end up buying far more books. Especially if it comes down in price after the post launch hype as died down, I'd probably buy the lowest priced iPad to use it mostly as an ebook reader.
Oh well, they want to keep the price artificially inflated so I'll just keep spending my money on a library card and at the used bookstore instead.
edit: I wonder if ebook piracy will ever take off. Maybe it already exists? Anyone know?

Has existed for 30 years, one of the oldest forms of computer based piracy.
And of course you know Google has every single english language book on earth completely scanned and OCR'd.. If Google ever decides to get into the ebook or elibrary business and can manage the proper agreements, they will trounce everybody because their database dwarfs everybody.

Ok still plying with this thing and I have decided to try and stream from my iTunes library, and downloaded remote pc app. It seems to have worked for some of the songs(mp3's) but others are saying format not supported (apple downloaded stuff). Is this an easy fix or am I late to the apple monopolizing party?
