I take it there's no way around the "registered devices only" restriction?

I don't really get jailbreaking an iPhone.

If I were the type of person to do that I would buy an Android instead.

Furthermore, I would imagine that I would also be posting this from an Ubuntu rig.

I don't get caught up in the whole gimmick aspect of jailbreaks and all the crap that inevitably slows and crashes the phone... but some of it is actually quite nice. A real terminal app with actual system-level access is one, the "phone as a WAP" thing is also pretty useful. Themes are nice, too, when implemented subtly...

Or there's new stuff between 4.0 and the new hardware to combat jailbreaks. Though one would have thought the iPad would have had that.

Just installed iOS 4.0 Gold Master on my 3G and jailbroke it. With all the iOS 4 goodness disabled on the 3G, there's even more reason to jailbreak. A quick change to a Springboard plist file and you get the home screen wallpapers and native multitasking!

Maybe it's just from a clean restore, but I swear it's faster than 3.x

Followed these directions, super easy: http://pixelatedgeek.com/2010/06/ios...for-iphone-3g/

Awesome, thanks. Do you notice and battery or memory limitations while multitasking on your 3G?

I just finished the installation so I'm not sure just yet. I can tell you the homescreen wallpaper disable was probably only put in by Apple to encourage 2G/3G owners to upgrade hardware - it causes no slowdown at all.

Multitasking - I'm sure with half the RAM of the 3GS I'll run into trouble eventually. I'm guessing it will just be a matter of closing apps when you're finished with them. Apple can't enable it by default because they can't expect customers to go and close their apps manually periodically in order to maintain performance.

iOS 4 with multitasking enabled on a 3G is sloooooow. It's usable - if you don't mind constantly closing all your apps.

I'm going to see how much faster it is with them disabled.

After using backgrounder (jailbroken app) for a week on my iPad 2 things are apparent:

1. backgrounding is excellent and I don't want to go without it
2. I'm greatly looking forward to Apple's version, because backgrounder sucks. It seems to work some of the time but not always, and I accidentally turn it off more than I use it properly.

I'm looking to unlock my Fido 3GS so I can use my phone when I move to Brazil with their local providers and networks. I saw a few people on Kijiiji that will do it for $15-20 and I did call 403-2-Unlock and they do it for $35. But I'd like to know if anyone recommends anyone in particular? I'm looking to unlock, not jailbreak. Thanks

In many ways I don't like loading any more than that onto my phone because I also demand a stable device.
So MyWi will turn your iphone into a wi/fi hotspot that you can connect to with your ipad? That is a killer app for me and justifies both my 6gb data plan and not having to pay rogers another $30 for what I don't use now. That could be the difference of getting an ipad. I was seriously considering the android as my next mobile os for that one feature.

I thought we could not post about illegal programs? If people cannot post about Free To Air programming then this thread should be closed as well.

Just because Bell/Rogers/TELUS don't like you unlocking your phone, and Apple doesn't like you Jailbreaking your iPhone, does not make it illegal.

Yes it is illegal, just because you like to doesn't make it ok.

How is it illegal, under the current law?

And you can talk about FTA, you can't talk about getting the for-pay signals for free.

Apples stance is that the program is illegal.

Also, I have an infraction for talking about FTA even though I said nothing about how to get free programming so that is actually false.
