Officer stabbed downtown

Paramedics rushed a law enforcement officer to hospital Tuesday morning with life threatening injuries following a stabbing at the ASIRT offices downtown.

Police were called to the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team offices on the third floor of the 7 Ave. JJ Bowlen building around 10:30 a.m.

“The patient we are transporting is a member of some law enforcement agency,” said EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux, adding the victim was not a Calgary city police officer.

A second man treated at the scene “is potentially the perpetrator,” said Brideaux.

The attacker is a civilian, said Brideaux.

ASIRT is a provincial body that investigates serious incidents involving police officers.

Two officers who work with the Alberta's police investigative team have been stabbed in their own office building downtown.

Clifton Purves with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says two male officers in their mid-50's have been rushed to hospital.

Officers were questioning the suspect in a room when he pulled a knife and stabbed the officer. The suspect suffered injuries to his head when they were getting control of him. It is not known how he got ahold of a knife.

EMS tell 660news the victim is in serious, and possibly life threatening condition.

A suspect is in custody.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., today, Tuesday, June 1, 2010, police responded to reports of a stabbing at the John J. Bowlen Building, 620 7 Ave. S.W. Upon arrival, it was learned that a civilian witness to an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation had attended the ASIRT office for an interview.
Shortly after being escorted into an interview room by a plain-clothes RCMP member assigned to ASIRT, the witness, a 30-year-old man, turned violent and attacked the officer, stabbing him multiple times.

Other ASIRT members heard the commotion and rushed to intervene, taking the suspect into custody and immediately rendering assistance to the wounded officer. EMS was immediately notified and the officer was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. His condition has since been upgraded to stable.

One of the intervening officers, a Calgary Police Service member who is assigned to ASIRT, sustained a knife wound during the arrest. He was treated at the scene.

The offender, who is known to police, was also taken to hospital with undetermined injuries sustained during the arrest.

It's the old John J Bowlen building, not the new Calgary Courts Centre.

They don't always search witnesses so maybe this is the case. I know when I witnessed a murder downtown they never searched me when interviewing me.

Thats true, I had forgotten about that, I was a witness to a domestic assault (Almost got charged because I jumped in and punched the assaulter in the mouth, and I wasn't searched.

I was just talking to one of my buddies who works with Calgary EMS, who had talked to one of the paramedics on scene. Apparently the guy who did the stabbing said he knew something in relation to that shooting that occured in November, when a cop shot and killed a man who may have been part of a Somali gang. When he was taken in for interview, he wasn't searched (like people above had said) and then when one of the cops left the interview room to go get something, he takes out the knife and jumped on the other one that was left in the room. My buddy thinks its one of the family members of the guy who got shot (hence why he was known to police) and was out looking for revenge. Again this is all hearsay and a lot of speculation...but sort of fits the bill.

Further to the previous press release, investigators have now determined the offender showed up at the ASIRT office unannounced, and asked to speak with a member. It was at this point that the offender was taken to an interview room, where the stabbing took place.

I only heard a snippet from CTV but they said the offender (the man who stabbed the RCMP officer) was the man who police shot at in the fall at westwinds park.
