Whitefish. Stay at the Hidden Moose B&B. Breakfast there is awesome, and they have happy hour from 4-7pm. Free wine and beer by the fireplace.
Go for supper at the Tupelo (save room for the Bread Pudding).
If you venture out for Breakfast, Loula's or the Buffalo Cafe are both awesome. If you want to shop, you have Kalispell near by. Glacier Park is 20 min away. If you need a good coffee and want to see cute girls, Cowgirl coffee is the stop for you.

I'll add my vote to Waterton. Very similar to Banff as far as the scenery is concerned, but it's a lot less crowded and commercialized.

Waterton is nice. The town itself is much smaller and quieter than Banff. I wouldn't budget a lot of time for the town as you'll pretty much be able to do the whole thing, including the Price of Wales hotel, in an hour or two.
If you're heading down that way, however, I'd recommend driving across the border and doing the Going to the Sun highway through Glacier National Park. Crazy views, cliffs, etc. It is a slow drive, and you just kind of meander through the mountains, so leave lots of time.
There's not much on the other side (for food and that kind of stuff), at least not right at the end of the park. When my wife and I did that drive a couple of years ago, we did it on a whim so we didn't really plan anything. In fact, our B&B was in Waterton and we needed to haul tail a bit to get back to the border in time. I believe it closes at 10 or 10:30 PM. There's probably all sorts of nice places on the US side (that Hidden Moose place that others have suggested sounds awesome) to avoid having to turn around and come back right away.
A kind Montana Highway Patrol officer actually let me off of the hook for going a wee bit fast, as he also knew about the border crossing. Made it back with about 15 minutes to spare.

I'm interested to hear about them. I have a place in the valley and other than the Eagle Ranch clubhouse the Black Forest has always been the best IMO.

Not really, it's way smaller and not as commercial. Although that is slowly changing. There are lots of awesome hiking trails (all different skill levels) and Cameron falls is pretty cool in the spring time.
In the middle of the summer I highly recommend checking out red rock canyon. It's a great hike and has some water slides carved naturally into the creek bed. So it's great for a cool off.
You can also drive up to the Prince of Wales hotel and get a great overhead view of the entire town and lake.
My kids love the bison paddock, it's not in the park but just north east of the entry gates. The park information shack can probably give you better directions than I could.

Awesome...I've got little kids so these two things are their speed and on the to-do list.
