Sorry to hear that. I agree, this kind of thing is still far too common.

Ugh, another unnecessary death...sorry to hear Tranny. One would hope that at least somebody takes a lesson from this and doesnt get behind the wheel the next time they are in this type of situation.

I hate to be callous, but if he was going to kill anyone because of drinking and driving, at least it was himself and not the other two innocents in the crash.

Everyone's free to say whatever they want on CP, within site rules, but this comment is really unnecessary imo.

Yes, it's a vaild point, but this isn't a thread about a random car accident, this is the guy posting about losing a friend, and I think your comment fits under 'Something that goes without saying, and really doesn't need to be said here'.

Hey I'm not here to rub salt in anyones wound. The reality is that way too many of these tragic situations end up with innocent people being killed. Nobody likes to see someone close to them die in this type of needless situation, but we can at least all be grateful that there were no faultless victims claimed.

Really??

You just had to go there?

If you hated to be "callous" why did you?

Well I agree with what you're saying, and I don't think you'd find anyone who would disagree. All I was saying is that it isn't being very tactful to basically say 'It's a good thing your friend died and not the other people'. I know those aren't the words you used. "but if he was going to kill anyone because of drinking and driving, at least it was himself and not the other two innocents in the crash"

I guess my point was just that your comment was more suited to a general thread about drinking and driving, not a personal thread where you're saying it's a good thing he killed himself and not others, while that person is a friend of the OP. But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

You're right Seabass...you caught me, I love being callous.

Flameswin, if it was inappropriate, my apologies.....that really wasn't the intent. Drunk driving is a major peeve of mine, but perhaps this wasn't the right moment for that. I've just seen too many tragic outcomes, and my sympathy meter is not quite what it used to be for these types of situations.

Sorry for your loss, Transplant.

I've been on the opposite side of this situation (a drunk driver crossed the centerline and killed some of my very close family members), but the daughters and grandchildren of the driver are still faultless victims who will suffer because of someone else's poor decisions. In my case, the drunk driver's children won't see their mother for most of their teenage years, and that's through no fault of their own. In this situation, it's even worse for the family of the driver. I'm glad that it sounds like the people in the other car will be alright, but there are always innocent victims in a situation like this. I just hope that people are slowly learning something from all of these drunk driving tragedies.

I think BC just implemented stricter laws. All jurisdictions need to do this. I've seen so many cases thrown out because of technicalities.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-col...al-rights.html

Civil liberties advocates say tough reforms of B.C.'s impaired driving laws, which would give police powers to issue costly roadside fines, impound vehicles and suspend licences, might be unconstitutional.

Anyone recording a .08 blood alcohol level on a breathalyzer will face a:
  • $500 administrative penalty.
  • $250 licence reinstatement fee.
  • $700 bill for towing and vehicle impoundment.
  • Mandatory participation in an $800 drivers program.
  • $1, 420 bill for one year's use of an ignition interlock device once they start driving again.
The total cost would be $3,670.

They would also get an immediate 90-day driving ban, their vehicle would be impounded for 30 days and they could face criminal charges.

Is that really tough though? it's just a bill for costs. I'd hope to see some jail time. Maybe like 30 days to start.

You lose your license before you go to court, then you can lose it again if you are convicted.
