Default Car bomb in Times Square

Most fortunate someone alerted the cops on this, Saturday night in Times Square is extremely busy.

Quote:
A T-shirt vendor who noticed smoke coming out of a tinted, dark green sport utility vehicle alerted police to what turned out to be a potential bomb placed in Times Square.

Inside the vehicle, police found three propane tanks, two filled five-gallon gas containers, two clocks with batteries, consumer-grade fireworks and a locked metal box that resembled a gun locker.
The wiring around the device "was nothing that looked amateurish," Bloomberg said.

Maybe the story has changed as it now reads that the wiring "looked amateurish"

The 'truthers' are already out in full force claiming "Times Square was an inside job". Check out the comments to the CBC story.http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/0...-car-bomb.html

Yeah, that looks like a safe distance to keep people away from a car filled with propane and gas. Although, who are the geniuses who want to be that close to it? Defused or not, my ass wouldn't be front row to the car bomb show.

"..consumer grade fireworks." like roman candles and a few screamers? This is a bit of a terrorist fail. I think in the other contries, the pros fill the car with ball bearings and nails and stuff. These guys didn't watch 'The Kingdom' i guess.

I think the problem is that he watched too many movies. Clocks + Wires = detonator.

Weird feeling knowing I was there less than 24 hours before they found it. Glad no one was injured.

You're a suspect now.

Pakistan's Taliban takes responsibility for the car bomb.

http://www.news1130.com/news/nationa...n-times-square

Quote:
The U.S.-based SITE intelligence group, which monitors militant websites, said the Pakistani Taliban claims the attack is revenge for the death of its leader Baitullah Mehsud and the recent killings of the top leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Clearly the Patriot Act isn't doing enough.

DO MORE!!!

Take away all those civil liberties and the bombs will go away.

No Taliban link to NYC bomb: police

There is no evidence of a Taliban link to a failed bomb found in a sport utility vehicle parked in Times Square, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Sunday.

Kelly said officers were on their way to a town in Pennsylvania to talk to a tourist who may have recorded a bombing suspect on his video camera.

The commissioner said the possible suspect, a man in his 40s, was captured on security camera video in the area as he took off a dark shirt to reveal a red T-shirt underneath. He said police may be able to release that video in the coming days.

They've said that a 40-something white male was spotted changing clothes and looking back towards the car half a block from it, so he seems to be the top suspect. There are also stories that a tourist has a picture of the suspect, so between 1000's of tourists with cameras, and hundreds of security cameras, I think they know who they're looking for.

I think it'll end up being some kind of nut that thought fireworks plus gasoline plus propane would surely equal a bomb. Listening to some of the news anchors talk about this was almost painful, as some of them were commenting on how "sophisticated" the bomb was. Hardly...

We're just lucky it wasn't another OKC style AmFo bomb by someone that knew what they were doing.

I'm always skeptical on who they say they are targeting and looking for as a suspect before they actually catch anyone.
I think they sometimes release info on suspects in an attempt to let the actual suspect think they are on a different trail and let the guy rest and hopefully slip a little.

I remember with the DC snipers, they told everyone that they were looking for a van, and then ended up catching the guy in an older car.

I bet they turn around and blame this "bombing" on some "right wing extremist" group, or maybe a militia.......or hell maybe even the tea party members...

Being white doesn't necessarily mean its a home grown terrorist plot by the lunatic fringe. There are lots of Caucasions that link to terrorist groups out of euro-asian nations.

Right, but if this person was linked to any "real" terrorist group, you'd think he could have asked them how to make a bomb.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this is its a ploy to distract the American people from the Oil Platform Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Yeah, that's exactly what it is. That's why Obama is touring the Gulf as we speak, and holding a press conference
