Just noticed today at the new calgary transit stations downtown they have these small ashtrays at the entrance to each station. They are about 1.5 feet tall and 3inches by 2 inches.

They are very descrete and don't seem to smell when you walk by them yet. I think they could mount them on light polls in high butt littering areas.

I hate litterers. I wish that the people that carelessly throw garbage out in public or on the street arrive home to find someone dumped double the quantity in their living rooms and see how they feel. Do these people dump crap all over their houses? Probably not but I hope so because they have no right do so in public. Vile people.

Of course not, (I would hope) They have Garbage Cans for their garbage, and if they smoke, they have Ashtrays within their homes.

People are in charge of their own homes and so they provide themselves with what they need to function in a relatively clean and safe manor.

The City, for the most part does the same thing with our Tax Dollars to provide the citizens with what they NEED.....and even "want".

-Calgarians like to cycle and jog etc, so we have the pathways.

-Calgarians love their Dogs, so we have dog parks.

-Calgarians enjoy taking their lunch, coffee outdoors, so we have Garbage Cans.

-Calgarians smoke, But we don't have (many) Ashtrays.


I agree with your comment on people who litter, These are the NIMBY people who don't seem to care about those around them, but they are likely very concerned about their own domains. Like you said, they'll litter on the sidewalk, but not in their own back yards or homes.

There is no reason why the City can not provide Ashtrays in abundance for 200,000 people who smoke. It wasn't that long ago that they did just that. It all comes down to proper management (a whole seperate topic) and using a little common sense.
