So the picks involved....Denver gets a 5th round pick from Philly and added in a 7th with Scheffler. So to move up from round 7 to a round 5 pick cost the Bronco's Tony Scheffler. McDaniels is cleaning house.

Why get rid of a very good LB and one of the few above average players on the team for a TE when you just drafted Pettigrew in the first round last year?
It is just one move after a year of solid moves so I hope it isn't a return to the garbage management that the Lions have had over the years.

I am guessing it is a similar situation to Marshall. Sims is probably in his last year of his contract and Detroit didn't want to give him a long term contract.

Awful trade for both Detroit and Denver. AWFUL.

Perhaps Pettigrew's ACL surgery isn't rehabbing as fast as they would like?

Could be. Scheffler can be a great second option as well, but if you look at the deal I don't understand how Denver swaps a 7 for a 5 and are satisfied.

Were the Lions running a 3-4 defence back when Sims was originally drafted? They used to have Shawn Rogers who is an ideal 3-4 nose tackle, but I don't know what scheme they were running. Middle line backers in a 3-4 and a 4-3 are different athletes, as a 4-3 guy needs to be a quicker guy whereas a 3-4 guy needs to be big enough to occasionally go against an interior lineman.
But I do agree with Pettigrew already being there, it raises an eyebrow to see the Lions go get another tight end. This isn't fantasy where they're going to flip him to a team like KC or Cinci who need a tight end for a 4th round pick.

They were running a Tampa 2 defense.
Simms being smaller/faster fits into that better than he would in Schwartz system but he is good enough that the system shouldn't matter he will make plays in any system.

Linehan likes to use a 2 tightend set a lot but why deal one of your better players (contract issues or not) for a spot that you already have a very good player at, especially when you have so many holes.
Even if Pettigrew is going to take longer to recover who cares it isn't like the Lions are competing next year. Could have addressed a lot more needs, like LB, with a Simms deal.

Good trade. The Eagles are really desperate to find an LB that can effectively cover Jason Witten. Don't know if this will shore up the run game but it should make them better in pass coverage. I really don't understand the trade from Detroit's point of view.

Sims fit the Tampa 2 style, small, fast and athletic. Schwartz needs BIG LB's (a la Bullock), Sims didn't fit in. But I think he will be a BEAST in Philly.
Why Minnesota didn't look at him, I have no idea. A 5th rounder is a steal for them.

Still tons of rumours swirling around that the Eagles might look at trading into the top 10 and that the Chiefs are a potential trading partner. Eagles GM Howie Roseman seems to think he can use the 37th overall pick to land more picks in the draft. I'm wondering what it would take to get that 5th overall pick from KC.
You'd have to think the Chiefs would listen if the Eagles offered the #24 overall + their two third round picks.

I can't imagine thirds would be enough. Kansas City would have to want at the very least Washington's second included, if not both 2nd rounders.

Pick 5 supposedly carries a value of 1700 points, pick 24 is said to be 740, pick 37 is 530. If the Eagles wanted to move up that far they'd likely need to give both the 24 and 37 picks as they'd still be 400 points short. In this draft I think the point chart is a bit less relevent as the grades on the players seem to be close enough that the grades on many top guys won't make it worth the money you'll need to spend. KC would like to trade down, but I don't think they'd want to move down that many spots and only pick up 3rd round picks. They have holes to fill, but they need them filled now too, and third round picks usually aren't guys who step in and start the next season.

Probably right. We could also see some 2011 picks come into play too. I know Roseman covets that 37th pick, so maybe KC picks up #24, #55, 2011 second round pick, and #70. That would be very unlike the Eagles, and it's probably still not enough. Pioli probably doesn't even consider anything unless the #24 and #37 are coming to KC.

Philly's best chance might be to see if the 55 & 24 is enough to get to Miami's spot at 12. Than if they have pick 12, maybe they could work something involving a 3rd this year and a 2nd next year to go from 12 to 5. I could see the Chiefs being willing to move down that far.

Also today is schedule day in the NFL
A few things that have leaked.
Season opener Thursday Night game is Minnesota at New Orleans on September 9th.
The Bills will play the Chicago Bears in Toronto on the 7th of November.
All games in week 17 will be intra Division games.
I like the week 17 Division games, I'd even be in favor of making week 16 that way too. Even if the game is meaningless in the standings...Division games always mean something to the teams.
