Saw this on digg, I'm pretty sure already confirmed that it's a fake. And boy do I hope so. I have the 3gs, so I probably won't be upgrading any time soon, but man is that thing ugly. It looks twice as fat as my phone, the buttons on the side look like crap.

Actually on second thought, I hope that is the actual thing that way I will be pressured even less to upgrade.

Also the back doesn't show how many gigs it has, it won't turn on, how do they know it has an 80gig?

Actually looks pretty sweet, but can someone answer just one question I have? Why do leaked pics of anything have to be of such utter crap quality?

The idea is that because the person who took the photos had to do so secretly, they didn't have the luxury of properly composing the pictures. In actuality, it's usually done to disguise the fact that the item being photographed is a poorly constructed fake.

I have to agree with most of the comments on Engadget, it looks too square and the buttons look too "buttony" to be a real release product. At best, it might be a prototype for testing the hardware configuration (it apparently has a front-facing camera) without all the smooth edges that the actual retail product will have.

Supposedly it was found on the floor of a bar, which is pretty tough to believe too. Unless its a prototype, I agree with getbak that it doesn't look smooth enough to be an Apple iThing.

I'm told the 'flat' side panel is because they had too many warranty claims resulting from the 'round' side/back panel. The curved panel left the buttons more exposed from the underside of the device leading to breakage.
Flip your 3GS around and look at the volume and ringer switches from behind... there's too much that can catch on someone's pocket for a mass market device.

It looks less sleek but more durable.

I would really hate to be the group of chinese managers who will 'commit suicide' over this.
edit: also, that looks far too crappy to be an apple product.

Yeah after sleeping on it, it's not as great as I first thought. I really do like the idea of making the next one look more like the unibody MBPs though. Flat edges, round corners, brushed aluminum...
This one almost has that, but the buttons and the lines where the parts meet are pretty horrid.

One could argue that if this is truly a prototype then lines where the parts meet might not be in the final product. However the story is kinda sketchy of how it was found.

		| If you'll recall, the night before the iPad was revealed, we had leaked shots of the device from what appeared to be an Apple test lab. Upon further inspection of these pictures today, the aforementioned editor discovered that the new iPhone 4G we've just gotten photos of is actually sitting on the table beside the iPad prototype! |

This engadget site is sure getting some ad revenue though.

That iPad prototype looks nothing like the actual retail iPad, which goes back to the idea that it is, at best, a working test version and doesn't represent in any way any design changes that can be expected from the next generation iPhone.
The fact that it has a forward facing camera seems to confirm what has been rumored for quite a while anyway. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to show anything new or revolutionary.

The white blocks are to block out any identifying things so that the photo can't be linked to anyone specific, just in case Apple or someone's lawyers are bored.

Like when you post a photo of your car and blur out the license plate.

Hopefully this is just a prototype as I don't think it looks that great.. it's not terrible, just kind of utilitarian.

I would say Engadget is considered one of the top 3 sources for online tech/gadget news.
