No wait, I didnt miss that part because it isnt in there. The school screwed up by cancelling. Not sure how you can blame the parents for organizing a private prom for their children.

Is there another link to the story other than "the advocate".

The judge declined to force the school district to hold the prom because a parent-sponsored, private prom was being organized — and the understanding was that McMillen and her date were invited to that event. But Hampton says McMillen was never invited and organizers made it very difficult for her to find information on the time and location. That prom was later mysteriously canceled, with the Friday night event at the country club officially replacing it.

So the expectation, by the judge, was that she would go to a private prom with the classmates right? Then some parents and officials go through the trouble of organizing a 'fake' party to exclude her once again. That's why they are clowns.

its prom, this girl will look back at it a few years from now and realize high school was stupid, and going to prom is lame. Seriously, if someone doesn't want you there, why on earth would you still want to go? Have your own damn party and then at least you won't have to deal with the bigotry of parents and students who can't keep their noses out of other people's lives.

Well saying things along the lines of "Why is it a big deal, this girl won't care about prom in a few years anyway" kind of misses the point.

What if back in the 60's people said, "Well why do those black kids want to go to schools where no one wants them around? Why don't they just have their own schools where they won't have to deal with bigotry".

That's the point. Having to have your own party is the epitome of having to deal with bigotry.

I don't have a problem with the invite-only private event, in principle. The other kids deserve a prom event too, something their school denied them. I don't agree that they didn't invite everyone since it is fairly unclassy. Being a private event though, that is their choice.

What is despicable though is the setting-up of a decoy event to invite the girl to. That the school officials were also in on it (as chaperones to the country club fake prom) is pretty low of them as well.

This whole story, especially the latest fake prom business, is a showcase in how not to treat human beings. These are adults playing children's games. Shame on them.

Precisely. That you must constantly fight bigotry, and drag out these intolerant attitudes into the public forum to be harshly criticized and condemned.

American Humanist Association Joins Green Day and Lance Bass as a Co-Sponsor of Second Chance Prom in Mississippi
	Quote:

The American Humanist Association (AHA) announced today that it, along with the Grammy-winning band Green Day and popular singer and performer Lance Bass, will co-sponsor a prom for Mississippi youth, including students from Itawamba County Agricultural High School in Fulton, MS. The school made headlines in March when officials canceled its prom rather than allow a lesbian student, Constance McMillen, to bring her girlfriend as her date or wear a tuxedo. The Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition's second annual Second Chance Prom will be held on May 8, 2010 in Downtown Tupelo, Mississippi.
"We've very pleased to be able to support and promote LGBT equality alongside other sponsors," said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association. "We're proud to be standing on the side of love and acceptance instead of fear and prejudice, and we hope that the event will bring appreciation of the diversity within our society and encourage others to embrace it as a positive value that can continue to forge progress for all Americans."
The Second Chance Prom will feature dinner for guests, live entertainment, a ceremony to honor outstanding youth in Mississippi, booths highlighting organizations striving for LGBT equality and celebrity guests. Other sponsors of the event include Cat Cora and Tonic.com.

Apparently there was a prom just for those intolerant enough to agree with the school, where 7 seniors attended.

So this was a follow up to that ugly dance, in which the parents wanted nothing to do with a dance including lesbians, so this is why Green Day and Mr Bass jumped in. At least thats what I think happened.
