What is St. Patrick's Day, anyway?
What the hell is this holiday? I'm not Irish, I'm Scottish, and I have the colour red on my tartan, not green. Why should I celebrate the birthday of a wife-beating leprechaun (what I always picture St. Patrick's Day meaning as)?
Seriously, what is the story behind this holiday? Is it really just to go out and get fall-down drunk?

St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland.
They're a pretty heavily Catholic bunch over there, so they celbrate his feast day (there are a lot of saints, there are a lot of "Feast of St. Whoever").
How it turned into a big Broo Ha Ha? I'm not sure, but I'm sure it has something to do with the Irish loving the booze as much as they love The Church.
Also, it has nothing to do with snakes.

It's true that description makes it sound fail. Every time I've celebrated Robbie Burns day with my friend and his uber-Scottish dad, we just go to the bar, get hammered on scotch, and listen to him give drunken speeches. Always makes for an entertaining night.
