You know, I stood in an Australian pub after the final buzzer with at least 200 other Canadians who wished we could be home for that moment, and we spontaneously, proudly and loudly sang our anthem, and it was a cathartic experience. We were all the same, we all felt the same, and I'm sure that I wasn't the only one who felt it was one of the best moments of my life. I would have hated for that to be diminished by noticing people singing different versions of our anthem because of differing politics.

I'd probably crack up if I heard someone changing words in the anthem because they can't bring themselves to sing the real ones.

I feel the need to question Wikipedia on this, amongst many other things.

Yeah, again really its just about people either cling to "dont change history" or believe we should modernize it to reflect our culture.
I'm all for tweaking it IF it doesn't sound worse than our current Anthem, cause I really like it the way it is, minus the God stuff.

Oh Canada,
Our home and native land,
True patriot love,
In all our sons command
with flowing hearts we see thee rise the true north strong and free
From far and wide, Oh Canada, We stand on guard for thee!
God keep our land, glorious and free, Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee.
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee.

When a fight breaks out on the ice, the refs let players blow off a little steam then send players to the penalty box. The O Canada issue has let many express themselves, which is what democracy is all about.
Yes, we should not forget about the men who are dying in Afghanistan, but the anthem should not identify only one gender, it is for all persons.
The comments by Robert Stanley Weir's descendant's at www.publicpoetry.wordpress.com explain why "persons" is a good choice to replace "thy sons."
At the end of the game, or debate, we should all shake hands because it's not about winning, but about respect.

It seems to me that many more sons have given their lives for this country than daughters.
Men are not chattel to be used and spit out.

Okay. Now you are pissing me off.
Your logic is that more men have died protecting our country than women, therefore the national anthem SHOULD honour men and only men? To do otherwise would be to disrespect men as chattel?

I cant believe people actually care about the word sons. Ditto God. What a total waste of time to bother examining whether a song is politically correct enough. I suppose that since it's the national anthem, it might warrant a look, but it just blows my mid that anyone bothers to take offense to something like this.
Next thing you know, the folks at city hall will start bitching about the term 'alderman'.

As healthy as all this debate is, at least the government made the right choice and decided to leave the song alone.
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/sto...al-anthem.html
I understand everyone wanting certain things changed, like people wanting God removed, womyn (remember, real womyn don't need to spell their sex including the word "men") wanting equal representation, and whatever else someone might not like about the lyrics, and I'm glad we live in a country where all are free to voice their opinion on the subject. I'm also glad we didn't fall into the trap of changing a majestic and eloquent tribute to our country simply because of semantics. ( in this case )
For those who want to sing different words because you don't like the original ones, whatever. If you think you're proving a point then knock yourself out. I think it's stupid, and the people around you will probably just think you're an idiot who doesn't know the right words. The song is the song; if you're going to start changing it all around then you might as well just sing it to the tune of "O Christmas Tree" like the Americans do.

oh give it a rest. i'm about as die-hard an atheist as there is, and i have no issues with the word God in our anthem. when i'm at a Flames game or other event where the anthem is played, i sing it proudly. and if you can't because of one small religious reference (it's not even specific to christianity) then you are a petty little man

while we're at it we should force Oscar Meyer to change their hot dog song to not include the word wiener. You know, so as to honour all the women who've choked on them in the past
