We should make this our national anthem:

Quote:
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

They put the pause button on 'leading" the country for 6 weeks and this is the best they can come up with? Perhaps they're starting off slow...like The Flames...

It reminds me of an article I read years ago about changing names like mailman to mailperson.

Mailman isn't inclusive, because it uses man and doesn't address women. So, change it to mailperson. BUT mailperson has son at the end of it which still has a male conotation so it much be changed. Son is a type of child so to be inclusive, son should be replaced with child.

mailman --> mailperson --> mailperchild

Not surprising it's change to letter carrier.

This whole issue is a diversion from other potential problems (prorogation of Parliament, Afghanistan Detainee issue, deficit, Rights & Democracy, etc.) that the Conservatives have. They have no intention of ever doing this. In fact, Peter McKay and some Conservative back-bench MP's have already come out against the change, most likely with the blessing of the PMO.

Absolutely a diversion. I'm surprised that more people haven't made the link. It simply isn't going to happen.

Away with the lyrics...lets just use the HNIC melody, solved!

Oh wait that was sold and is collecting royalties.

Good thing this came up AFTER the olympics.

Buble turned me on to The Maple Leaf Forever:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Maple_Leaf_Forever

Muir was said to have been inspired to write this song by a large maple tree which stood on his property: Maple Cottage, a house at Memory Lane and Laing Street in Toronto. The song became quite popular in English Canada and for many years served as an unofficial national anthem.[2][3] Because of its strongly British perspective it became unpopular amongst French Canadians, and this prevented it from ever becoming an official anthem, even though it was seriously considered for that role and was even used as a de facto anthem in many instances.[4]

CBC Radio's Metro Morning show in Toronto ran a controversial contest to find new lyrics for the song in 1997. The contest was won by Romanian immigrant, mathematician, and now a songwriter, actor and poet, Vladimir Radian, who came to Canada in the 1980s. This version received its first full orchestral treatment on June 27, 1997, at a concert by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The new version removed references to British colonialism and the Union Flag, but added a reference to Quebec's provincial symbol, the fleur-de-lis.

During the final game of the Toronto Maple Leafs at their former home stadium, Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Anne Murray sang another version (modified from Radian's version) of the Maple Leaf Forever to the crowd. This version was also used by Michael Bublé during the 2010 Winter Olympics closing ceremony:

I have always liked the song, although I never knew the lyrics. We used to play that all the time in Air Cadets way back in the day... Nice tempo.

Do it, or I'll protest.
Or they could change it to "our home on natives land". That's the way I sing it anyways, and let me tell you, it feels great.

And stand on guard, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
Refrain
O Canada! O Canada!
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada! We stand on guard for thee.
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread and lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western Sea,
Thou land of hope for all who toil!
Thou True North, strong and free!
Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc.
O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies
May stalwart sons and gentle maidens rise,
To keep thee steadfast through the years
From East to Western Sea,
Our own beloved native land!
Our True North, strong and free!
Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc.
Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our dominion within Thy loving care;
Help us to find, O God, in Thee
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the Better Day,
We ever stand on guard.
Refrain
O Canada! O Canada! etc."
Then it would be almost as long as the Russian anthem...

By the way, the best National Anthem? Japan.

Kimi ga yo wa
Chiyo ni yachiyo ni
Sazare ishi no
Iwao to nari te
Koke no musu made.

English translation:

May the reign of the Emperor continue for a thousand, nay, eight thousand generations and for the eternity that it takes for small pebbles to grow into a great rock and become covered with moss.

wow I can't believe how far off most of you are. It's actually "In all Thy Son's command" Thy referring to God, Son referring to Jesus. It has nothing to do with men or women.

I think they should leave it alone, but I understand why some people would want it changed in that context.

*edit* in thinking about this change, it actually makes more sense. When they say "true patriot love thou dost in us command" then it actually refers to the country being so strong, beautiful or whatever that it 'commands' us to love it. I actually like this better

I always thought it was a reference to Christ as well.

Ditto.

Either way, the person who found fault with this should be sent on a date with 4x4. No matter what, someone is getting punched in the face.
