Usually bridesmaids and groomsmen pay for their own tuxedos/dresses. I paid for them for my wedding party as their gift, and it seemed to be appreciated.

If there is one thing I've learned over the past few years when it comes to weddings it is that there are no givens.

I dunno about that. I've stood up in something like 6 weddings and the only one where I didn't have to pay for the tux was when I was 12 and standing in my uncle's wedding. Something tells me that my mom payed for the tux.

If they make you pay for your tuxes, the couple better not expect a gift as well.

Heh. Or through an entire comedy of errors you end up paying for your tux, a gift from you, and helped to get a collective gift from the bridal party. But I digress.

How much do you want to spend? The best gift I've ever heard of was also quite expensive...buy them their own tuxes.

I think asking your friend to drop $100 - $200 on a tux and then expecting another $100 or so in a gift is pretty selfish.

If its your friend, and such a good friend that they want you to be in their wedding party, I'm sure they'll be happy with your company. Gifts aren't the point of the exercise. So if the extra $100 causes hardship, don't buy anything.

Different strokes, I guess. I, personally, would be a bit...um...meh about receiving a tux as a groomsman gift. The only occasion I'd ever wear a tux for is a wedding (as a groomsman), and since each groom has his own style for his wedding, owning a tux is a bit useless to me because I'd have nowhere to wear it. And that's assuming that I really like the style of tux that he chose for the groomsmen enough to wear it another time - which makes me appreciate that I'm a dude and don't have to buy a tux for every wedding I stand in like the girls have to buy their dresses (that never get worn again).

I bought mine each a Lego set from around the time that they all would have been the most into Lego (we all really liked Lego). I got them sets from I think 1981, 1983, and 1992, all still sealed in their original boxes. And this was in 2009, so getting sets from that era, while not too difficult in the internet world, is not too easy either (I think they came from Spain, Germany, and Canada).
Didn't pay for tuxes as we didn't go with tuxes, but instead just told them to wear a black suit, which obviously every man should own.
I think it worked out prety well.

Helicopter ride from Canmore through the mountains. Something they are unlikely to do themselves and therefore somewhat memorable. http://www.alpinehelicopter.com/
If outdoors people, an afternoon whitewater rafting for them + SO. Again, not something everyone does but is dead easy and a bunch of fun. http://www.insideoutexperience.com/

When i was a best man the groom gave the groomsmen engraved pocket watches. I thought it was pretty cool.

I bought mine personalized cufflinks. They may or may not get too much use out of them (a couple will, acouple won't) but every man should have a pair of cufflinks IMO.
