But this is precisely the point I was trying to make in my first post: It doesn't really matter whom is a "better person" (how does one even determine such a thing?) when speaking of public persona. People will earn reputations based on their performances in public, and Martin Brodeur has developed a tonne more social capital than Roberto Luongo. I find it difficult to cheer for Luongo because of the reputation that he has constructed for himself, whereby he is often perceived as arrogant, truculent and something of a poor sport.

For more on this phenomenon of social memory, I recommend reading Gary Alan Fine's Difficult Reputations or Barry Schwartz's Lincoln in the Forge of National Memory.

Why Canuck fans feel the need to continue to have round about arguments about Luongo is beyond me.

Honest question: Do you really think saying the same thing over and over will change anyone's mind?

We have this debate every second day yet the Canuck fans keep falling for the bait. Kinda pathetic.

Yup, I agree with this - both points/ways. This is getting a bit much; we have a small subset, on each side in my opinion, that just keep going and going and going. I agree it is pathetic, whether perpetual arguing or putting forth "the bait". Going in circles, both sides. Great Olympic spirit for your country.

Please remove this game from your list, I was there and it was one of the most boring games i have ever attended, not an odd man rush to be found for feaking 7 periods...also turcos numbers were just as good...that was a battle of defensive titans not goaltending...

Agreed 100%. Any time there is a Luongo thread or Canuck thread and it grows to 300 posts....I don't even need to look at it to know which 5 or 6 posters have been in that thread.

It goes both ways.

Sure it goes both ways but that would be like a Caps fan going to the Penguins board and arguing who is the better player. It is pointless, you aren't going to change the mind of the rivals just because you make the same point over and over.

Just like I'd expect some jabs/bait at a Canucks board revolving around Iginla, Kiprusoff and Phaneuf (well at least not that long ago ) and then wanting to make points to change their mind. I think it is fair to defend your guy but when it is obvious baiting, why bother?

I can agree with that. Luongo is a great goaltender--and here's hoping he leads us to a gold medal.

Just curious what exactly this has to do with the starting goalie in tonights game? Or did you just want to show off that you've read some books

Yeah. That's it. I really need to validate myself through "showing off" my amazing ability to read a couple of books to nameless, faceless internet avatars.

In my first post in this foray I was arguing that Iginla is universally more popular as a Canadian Olympic athlete—perhaps the most popular?—because he has developed such a great public persona. I also said that my own difficulty to cheer for Luongo is not so simply reduced to his playing for the Flames biggest rival, and that my dislike for him is reciprocally affected by his own image that has been shaped in the media.

I think Luongo is the best option for tonight's game, and—as I also already noted—I will be cheering for him to make enough saves for Canada to win. But by the same token, it is going to be equally difficult to wish for him the same personal success as I hope for Jarome Iginla, and this is very much related to Roberto Luongo's own public persona.

So the inclusion of the books was just a citing reference?

Marty will come in and save the day after the first intermission, when Roberto is unable to leave the bathroom.

Perhaps it is akin to an "occupational hazard"? I personally find the subject of reputation a fascinating topic of discussion; particularly in light of the high degree of media saturation in our own culture and time. I guess I just find it very interesting that a fan like me can feel such aversion for one given celebrity whom I have never met and likely never will meet, while at the same time hold a very different opinion of another one. Yeah, my musings are moving off topic, but what can I do? I'm a social theory geek.

I'm temporarily shelving my hatred for Luongo until March 1st. If he can help get us to the podium, so be it. Go Canada.
