Yup, this says to me that he's in shock... definitely didn't think he was going to be traded. He's pissed and I would be too considering Sutter said he wasn't going to be traded... pretty low move by Sutter. "I'm happy to be going to a team that wants me" really speaks volumes... It's business forsure, but there is still ethics evolved.

The Burke interview is worth a watch...says he asked about Dion earlier in the year and "it was a short conversation" sound like a flat no.

Says has been working on this deal with Sutter for a week-10 days and it kept getting bigger, each side had players they insisted be included. Says Sutter is a smart guy and a tough negotiator, and sound like the expiring contracts were a big part of the deal for the Flames.

I wish Phaneuf the best but its time he checks his ego. Its a serious issue. They interviewed him today and the tell tale sign of his ego issue truly became apparent. He stated, that anything is possible. If Gretzy can be traded, anyone can be traded. IMO, he is putting himself up there with the great players and thats an ego issue, which has hurt his game and development.

Interesting to listen to Dion's interview. A lot could be read into it. It sounded like there was some bitterness about the Flames, and not much regret about moving on.

The presser this afternoon will be real interesting.

I didn't realize being a whiner was a prerequisite of being a Flames fan this weekend. Give your heads a shake. Maybe you're right what does Sutter know? Who has he ever really seen the potential of and brought to the organization? Oh yeah Kipper. The guy is brilliant. He always has the best interests of the TEAM in his heart. Sit back and watch the show. There may be a few surprizes in store for us all...

Anyone else think Iggy didn't exactly sound all that torn up about the trade?

Brutal deal now. Worse in 5 years when Phaneuf is winning the Norris, and we don't have any of these scrubs playing for us.

I need a drink.
What happens is Phaneuf doesn't win the Norris, and turns into the next Bryan McCabe 2.0?

What happens if Stajan and White, and possibly Hagman, go on to be very essential pieces to this team and make a deep playoff run?

What happens if we sign Stajan for a good, long-term deal?

What happens if White more than replaces Phaneuf's spot on the blueline?

There's two sides to every story. Give the players coming in, and Sutter, some credit here. They haven't even played a game yet, for crissakes.

I said a part of this core had to be dealt, but it had to be an older part. Trading Phaneuf could look like a disaster this year, but it will be a disaster in two to three years when it turns out that this deal may have been Aullie and Phaneuf for White.

Have you watched Ian White lately? Did you watch him on HNIC last night? D. Sedin's fourth goal. He's about fundamentally sound as a building built out of balsa wood on sand. Read Leaf forums on the guy. He started great, but he's fallen off. Recently the goaltending in Teronnah have been the least of their problems. It's the bad D-core that was supposed to be amazing. If White was your "must atleast get" mark for a player like Phaneuf... well I can't tell you how sad that is.

Matt Stajan is going to get eaten alive in the Wester conference. He's soft as whipped cream. Every game I've watched of the Leaf's this year he's not been noticable. He benefits from playing with Kessel now, and if Kessel's not scoring then neither is Stajan. Who are you going to put him with? Jokinen? Langkow? Nevermind the fact he's a UFA and could walk shortly.

Hagman is the only player in this deal that makes any sense from a Calgary perspective. Knows the Western Conference, played in a defensive system in Dallas under Tippett. But again, when he gets to UFA, will he stick around?

Mayers is a plug. You can try and paint him as something else, but you'd be stretching. He's not that good, and he demanded a trade while going goalless for 21. Real team guy. Nice shot last night though, maybe he can do that for the Flames 21 games from now. Make this trade look real good.

He HAD more scoring upside than McGrattan. Then he got older and less good.

On paper. Sutter does a lot of neat stuff on paper though.

At the end of this trade the only big thing the Flames get out of this is cap space to chase a UFA in the off-season. A name like Kovalchuk or somesuch to help the offense. I son't think Stajan will help as much as you're praying. Hagman will chip in, but I get the feeling Stajan will be a goat on this forum pretty fast.

Losing Phaneuf for White is going to look like the Gilmour trade in a few years, bank on it.

In other news: Boston is crying but apparently Phoenix is happy as hell

Would I have liked a 1st rounder? Sure. But I'm perfectly fine with this deal. Stajan, White and Hagman are keepers that I hope we can re-sign if they pan out and R.Bourque is a must keep player that we should have money for now.

this is a tremendous trade that I feel, anyway, will help make us a better T.E.A.M.

PS: The major jump by Giordano as a bonafied Top 2 D-Man made his a much easier deal to do as well. I can totally live wih a top 4 of Bouw/Gio/White/Regehr. I still love Pardy as a 5 and would be ecstatic if we can find a contender to take Sarich and his salary and bring back a much lesser priced, but more effective replacement freeing up even more cash.. while getting younger.

Thank you for your input Mr Canucks troll, don't you have some CDC paste to go suck on? Everything you just wrote is a bunch of crap. Remember how you guys came from way back to take the division last year? Get ready to see how that feels!

I agree. He had a negative tone in his voice when he said hes happy going to a team that "wanted" him. IMO, the players on the team didnt want him to be here.

^^ I think Iginla (and maybe Regehr) might have been the ones who orchestrated this deal.

Maybe we're overthinking it but I couldn't help but notice that as well. Maybe it was just the captain being his typical diplomatic self.

good to hear.

Bad trade for us. Stajan is Huselius II, White is Sarich. Those two are going to get ripped on this board.

Not sure how good it is for Phaneuf either. He's going to from a market that at least is reasonable towards its players to one that will have effigies of him and his GF in the stands if he plays poorly. And the media there will not hide any sort of conflict between him and others.

If Phaneuf went somewhere where there wasn't much media coverage and scrutiny I could see him blossoming but in Toronto with all that pressure on him while playing on a brutal he's just going to turn into another Mccabe you can pretty much book that one. You may not like it but somebody on that d had to go and Dion probably brings us more return than anyone else exculding Bouwmeester. And let's be honest we needed more than just a little help on offense before this trade and we now have it.

Great news. Ya gotta think that these Leafs will be rejuvenated to go from a team going no where fast to a team contending for the playoffs. At least for the short term these guys could potentially have a big impact this year.

Seems like a bit of a desperate trade or a salary dump to sign a big name player. The Leafs are getting the best player in this trade. Three of the guys we're getting are UFA and Hagman is 30 years old. I do think that Stajan and White are pretty good players and will fit in here nicely but we gave up to much . We're going to miss Dion, that's for sure.

I believe well see a different player in Phaneuf under a new coach and on a new team, Burke pulled a fast one on us, no doubt.

If I were going to trade arguably my best asset from a returns perspective, my checklist of what I would need back would be the following:

- 1st round pick in 2010
- top 6 forward
- top rated offensive prospect

The Flames got none of these things. This move was in part hamstrung by Sutter's mismanagement of draft picks, in particular this year. The Flames need to make the playoffs this year for Sutter to (IMO) keep his job. This move, while for this year is at least a wash for the Flames, will only get worse with each passing year.

I am a big fan of Hagman but on a good Stars team he was a 2nd/3rd liner. When the Leafs were at least competing for 8th in the conference a few years back, Stajan was a 3rd liner. These are where these guys actually fit in with a good team. They have inflated stats in some part because the team they played on had no other options. White is a decent defenseman but is Giordano light I feel. And Mayers shouldn't even make the Flames lineup.

It's clear that there was a lot of turmoil behind the scenes and that Dion HAD to go, so getting this package back in theory may be decent considering the circumstances. Personally, I would have been much happier had the Flames gotten back the return that Anaheim or Edmonton got for Pronger, or at the very least had Sutter done something like Phaneuf for Jeff Carter.

Well. In my opinion the Leafs just got a little better, the Flames I'm not so sure about, but we will have to see.

Not even close. SHows how much you watch hockey. Both sets of players are completely different skill sets.
