Fan 960 is saying that if you want kaberle, you have to give up a first round pick and a second round pick.
Funny, if you want Phanuef you have to give up a bunch of rental players and Calgary will throw in a prospect.

there has to be another trade on the way - we have 2 too many roster players and must move down to 23 today under league rules

First of all, my sympathy to all the people who were big Phaneuf fans; as much as people were giving him the goat horns this year, he was extremely popular and this is going to be a tough one for the fan-base to bear. And I imagine it wasn't an easy trade for Sutter to make.
It's trading from a position of strength to fill a position of weakness, and a top five of Regehr, Bouwmeester, Giordano, Sarich, and White is pretty solid still. In fact, I think the emergence of Giordano is probably the reason Sutter felt he could make this trade.
Sjostrom has shown nothing since mid-November. I didn't particularly like picking him up, and I'm not sorry to see him go. Hagman is a great asset, I've wanted him on the Flames since he was with Dallas. Solid two-way instincts, and a good contract; could be a good fit on the first line LW. Stajan, I'm so-so on, but he's a good faceoff guy. Where does he slot in on the Flames though? We've got way too many centers. Mayers I have no interest in; what does he bring that Prust or McGratton don't have? And if this is a prelude to trade Prust or Grats, I'll be pretty unhappy. Probably spends time in the press box.
There's no question the Leafs won this trade. But I think the Flames are definitely no worse now than they were yesterday, and if anything are a little better. I would have liked a great prospect coming back (or avoid losing Aulie) rather than Stajan and Mayers. I'd like to see another trade to resolve the number of forwards we have.

I am trying to make projected lines and I honestly cant with this deal. Here is my attempt:
Hagman-Jokinen-Iginla
Bourque-Langkow-Stajan
Glencross-Conroy-Moss
Prust-Boyd-Mayers
Grats
Dawes
Lundmark
Backlund
Bouwmeester - Regehr
Giordano - White
Sarich - Pardy
Johnson

Listening to Dion's reaction on the Fan, he's still in cliche mode, but quite emotional. Just trying to keep it together.
He also says he did not request a trade.

Seriously drunk.
We gave up more and got less than Boston got for an unsigned Phil Kessel. Put that in perspective
|
The "unsigned" status meant nothing, the Leafs knew what they needed to pay. The fact that Dion is signed to a massive deal makes his value less, not more.
The Flames got better for now, there is no denying that. You lose a few big hits but you'll still get to see the defensive gaffes with White. You added 2 forwards that will help you offensively, immediately. I guess Mayers is an upgrade from Prust too.
I did expect to se the name Schenn in the deal though.

Something serious had to have been happening for D. Sutter and B. Sutter to give up on Phaneuf like this. Something very, very serious. Regehr didn't want to play with Phaneuf, and Regehr is a very influential guy in the room.
|
people who think that fans booing had influenced Darryl Sutter need to think again; does Darryl strike you as someone that is going to move a player - esp. Dion - because fans boo him?!
There has been lots of idle talk about there being an off ice issue in the room. no one except those in the room know if that is true or not.
the biggest disappointment, is not getting any young prospects in return.
Shaking up the core was the only move left. That's what Darryl has done. whether is pays off remains to be seen.

Love Ian White, the guy is a player. Adds a rh shot to the D as well, something we've been missing.
Like Hagman, and Stajan should work well with Iggy.
Overall a little disappointed at the return.

Phaneuf sounds a bit sad in the media scrum... He sounds very, very depressed, to be honest. Kind of feel bad about him, even though I suspected something might have been up. Poor guy. Says he never requested a trade, and the hardest part is saying goodbye to your buddies.

Stajan and Mayers are both over 50% in the circle. Stajan took the most faceoffs for the leafs and won 51.3% while Mayers is just over 58% in the circle. Probably one of the most overlooked aspects of this trade is how it helps the Flames in the circle.

I don't understand this notion of the Flames needing a big time player in return.
Big time players generally come with big time contracts. And if they don't have one yet, no team is going to trade them for Phaneuf and his $6.5m contract.
We already have Iginla, Bouwmeester, Kipper, Langkow, and Regehr making big money contracts. It really didn't make sense for the Flames to take another huge contract back, especially with Bourque and Jokinen looking for new deals in the off-season.
