NBC wants to keep the I.P. rights? That's low. Didn't NBC try and stop Letterman from doing his Top 10 list when he went to CBS? He kept doing it.
Additionally, because of intellectual property disagreements, Letterman was unable to import many of his Late Night segments verbatim, but he sidestepped this problem by simply renaming them (the "Top Ten List" became the "Late Show Top Ten", "Viewer Mail" became the "CBS Mailbag", etc.) [wikipedia]
In The Year 4000? The Self-Gratifying Bear? Rude Puppet Dog?
The last two weeks have been outstanding television. The controversey is bringing out the best.

I was thinking along the same lines: "In the Year 3000... and 1"
He should just change the names in the slightest, like Chinese knock-off products.

Most Fox stations have news from 10:00 to 10:59, so Conan would likely be starting at 11:00, which will help him.
You're completely right in that the most likely result is Conan pulling in 3rd place ratings in the short term. From Fox's perspective, the only way that it makes sense is if they're looking at building the Fox brand, and looking for a show that's going to pay off over the next 10 or 15 years; when Jay and Dave eventually retire, Conan will become the most established brand in late night television. Whether they're willing to make that sort of long-term commitment remains to be seen.
That said, they can't ignore ratings in the meantime; they'd need him to pull in strong numbers, even in third place. If he continues to have the best ratings of any of the three in the youngest age category, Fox would probably be pretty satisfied.

Yeah, my worry with FOX is that they don't really have a great track record with giving shows a chance to get rolling. With Arrested Development and Futurama, when the initial ratings were not there, FOX did neither of these shows any favors by always preempting them and giving them little-to-no advertising support.
If cooler heads can prevail at FOX, and they are willing to accept limited victories at the beginning, then I think the investment would pay great returns for FOX to take on Conan.
Just curious, has there been any other American late night show by the name of The Evening Show? I was just trying to think of what Conan would name the show, as I am sure FOX would want him to start a brand, not just have a show with his name as the title.

Really? I thought it was hilarous. I couldn't stop laughing when they did that bit.
Conan has been top notch this week now that he doesn't have to tone down anything for his audience. I'm gonna be sad when it comes to an end on Friday, but hopefully he'll end up on Fox in September so I can watch him again.

Oh, another IP question.
The theme song, can he take that with him? Does the composer, Conan, or NBC own the rights?
Conan wouldn't be the same without the opening song.
Edit: Never mind, I found part of the answer myself. The Song is entitled "Cornell Knowledge" and I believe Howard Shore and John Lurie still own the rights. I hope they do at least.

Another outstanding episode last night, Conan's pretty much become Must See TV the past couple weeks. You can tell he's so much more laid back and "Late Night"'ish, its awesome. Masterbating Bear! Did not see that coming.

NBC has finally announced what TMZ has been reporting for days -- Conan O'Brien will be a free man on September 1.
NBC released a statement moments ago, officially announcing Conan's last appearance on "The Tonight Show" will be tomorrow.
NBC noted that the deal -- struck today -- will free Conan to "pursue other opportunities after September 1, 2010."

It's done. Re-runs next week until the Olympics.

One thing you can always say about Fox, they will often try the unconventional (Simpsons, X-Files, 24, resurrection of Family Guy after being cancelled twice, American Idol, etc.).
