It's crazy how many similarities exist there. They made the right choice in 92 to stick with Leno, and they're making the wrong choice now in 2010 to bring him back.

If I'm head of NBC, I'd be thinking how many more years does Leno have left? He's a 60 year old man. Even Johnny Carson only stuck around til he was 66. So, can we assume Leno will do the job for another 5 years, then what? Who's left to replace him? Jimmy Fallon? I hope that's not plan A.

David Letterman will be gone in a few years too...I assume Craig Ferguson will fill that role and not be able to take over the Tonight Show.

Meanwhile, Conan is just 46 years old. He's got a good 20 years left in him as a tv host. His show is only 7 months old, he's never had the benefit of a good lead in like Leno did throughout his time as host.

I can see how this makes sense for NBC for the next few years, but long term....eeek. Even short term, Leno is now a damaged brand. Not only did his prime time show fail, but he's coming across as the ass in all this, something which isn't going to help his ratings.

I predict the first 3 days of Leno on The Tonight Show 2.0 will do great, and after that he gets a regular butt kicking from Letterman in the ratings.

Why is the "low ratings" of Conan even a factor here? The whole reason this thing started is because Leno absolutely sucked and wasn't keeping people on the channel so they watched the news. NBC given the choice between old and true and newer and growing, decided to go with the guy that goes down on his knees easier. You compare numbers from Carson to Conan... tell me... what percentage do those numbers reflect? And where did those people go to?
Hard to complain about people not watching you because of low ratings of a show that ends 35 minutes earlier

If that is the case Conan should complain about the bad ratings of NBC's 8 and 9 pm shows because they aren't highly rated either

If his show was good enough people would watch it, he was just not doing a good show and people were not watching it. I would love him to go to fox and do a show like he did on Late Night, but it wasn't good enough on the tonight show.

All the people crying out that Conan is being screwed and are going on "team conan" on facebook etc. could have easily solved the current problem by watching his show in the first place.

You just aren't getting it are you. Barely anything you typed made sense. Why in the hell should Conan complain about the 8 and 9pm shows? I'm still racking my brain behind your logic.

I can't believe we don't have a "Conan or Leno" poll set up yet. any chance we can get one started? I'd be interested to see it.

If you ask me, people are creatures of habit, and NBC screwed with peoples tv watching habits. They had their routine, watch tv drama, watch news, watch the tonight show and go to bed. NBC confused people by moving all of their dramas and essentially, placing the show they usually fall asleep to an hour and a half earlier(honestly is Leno's new show much different).
I for one hate the new format and stopped watching NBC/Leno because of it. once Leno takes over the Tonight show, i'm sure there will be a bunch of old fogeys set in their way who will fall back into their routine and rating will rise. I for one will not watch Leno, he's not funny, dull as crap, and if i have to listen to the lame, unfunny banter between him and kevin ever again...

dont like Leno that much, i liked Conan on late night not on the tonight show. But Leno is far more popular and makes the network more money

I guess I just don't get why people are professing their love for Conan's tonight show now, when they could have done so by watching it. (dont mean anyone specifically just the public in general)

if you are complaining about the lead in from Leno's show, what is the difference from complaining about the lead in from shows that end at 9 and 10

If conan can blame Leno for his bad ratings, Leno can blame NBC's crappy ratings in primetime for his bad ratings

if a show is good enough the lead in shouldn't matter

I honestly don't think the tonight show's low ratings are as big an issue here as people are making out to be. The problem is that NBC is getting a lot of push back from the local affiliates for low News ratings, these are proceeded by Leno. hence they blame Leno for the week lead-ins.
NBC does not want to lose Leno as they're afraid he'll go to Fox and compete against them.
NBC had to make a choice, lose Conan or Lose Leno.
who would you chose to compete against you if you were the president of NBC?
NBC is in a lose/lose position now. all because Leno changed his mind and decided he wanted to keep going after he said he wanted to retire. He screwed NBC royally.

News is a little different from regular shows. Every station has a news broadcast and usually you hook them from the show that's on at 10. That's why they do little commercials at night with the "Up ahead at 11..." for the news.

I just watched Craig Ferguson's 1000th episode on Youtube. This is why I think he's the best in the business right now. He did the entire show in puppetry I grew up staying up late and sleeping in class in school watching Conan @ 1:30 in the morning in the 90s but even if Conan goes, I'm glad Ferguson's around nowadays.

Ferguson (as Prince Charles) is totally messing around with that chick.

To be fair to Leno, he didn't want to retire. NBC forced him to in order to try to keep Conan back in 2004. When 2009 came around and Leno was still garnering big ratings, NBC freaked out and promised him a primetime show instead of letting him go to a competing network. So really the blame lies totally with NBC and their mismanagement of both Leno and Conan IMO.

Yeah, back then, everybody was claiming that setting a 5 year plan for transferring ownership of the Tonight Show was done to avoid a repeat of the Leno/Letterman scandal but now it's getting even worse.

What irony.

In 2004, Leno and Conan were at the top of both their timeslots. NBC had to resign Conan and wanted to keep him on and figured that Leno would retire or something by the time he was 60. They made this pact so that Conan WOULDN'T leave by offering him the tonight show. 2009 came around and it turns out Leno doesn't want to quit and he's still on top in ratings. NBC panics and stupidly assumes they can move Leno down an hour and he'll get the same ratings. Conan will better Leno's old ratings on the Tonight Show, and Fallon would pick up the rest. They also gambled that the Leno show would negate the need for NBC to produce actual televion (comedies/dramas) and they could save money that way since NBC has sucked at that part since the 90s ended.

I must humbly disagree. Interesting premise, but I just didn't find the episode all that great. Some great guests, but that's about it. And apparently it didn't go over well with the fans either. He's mentioned a couple of times how it wasn't received very well.

And I didn't even know he was doing a show here next week till he mentioned it last night I got to keep a better eye on acts coming to town.

thanks for the link to that clip

What a ######bag Jay Leno turned out to be. He wanted to go out on top and save us all the fighting with Conan, but now it's turned out to be exactly what he said he didnt want in that 2004 clip
