Ya, I heard it got worse after that. But for me, even the Black album was too much of a stray from their earlier stuff. It just didn't seem to have the edge their other stuff had. I also remember being in highschool at the time and it seemed like once the Black album came out, every preppy in the school was suddenly a Metallica fan.
I never listened to any of their other albums after that, but still listen to their older stuff occasionally.

I'm going to go a little off the map here and say S&M. Although I'm not a huge fan of how much Load/Re-Load stuff is on it, and the lack of Sanitarium, Fade to Black type songs, it is one of the best albums I own.
I get that they probably had to go with more of their 90s stuff because the older stuff was too fast to accompany orchestra with it.
Also, I am aware that it isn't a studio album, but it is still by far my fav.

It's a matter of taste. I know of many old school fans who have come back because of Death Magnetic. One being a guy I work with. I lent him my Nimes concert Bluray and that night he phoned me and told me I brought him back. It's not Master of Puppets 2 and nobody should have ever expected it to be but nobody can say it's not a metal album.

Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are both very good. Not sure which I'd choose as the best though, Creeping Death is my favorite Metallica song, but Damage, Inc. is pretty awesome too.
I'll go with Ride the Lightning.

Kill Em' All!
Death Magnectic was great! and although it's probably been overstated...It totally reminded me of the Justice album.

For Me, They died a little when Lars started his Napster Tantrum.
....Then they completely Flat Lined after I watched the Documentary "Some Kind of Monster".
Still love their music, But I can't stand any of them as Individuals anymore.

well, metallica is by far my most favourite music ... i saw them with Cliff Burton (if i remember correct) play the concert bowl at Pacific Coliseum probably more than 20 years ago!
i used to say Master, but I absolutly love Death Magnetic. Every song on it kicks ass, seriously. I didn care much for everything after MOP, but jus cant get enough of Death Magnetic.
if you gave up on Metallica in the last 10 years, Death Magnetic will win you back.
**one of my prized possesions is a bootleg of Metallica's first demo, "no life to leather" and it has Mustaine in the tracks.
pps ... any one else really dig "loverman"? its a bit obscure, but pretty cool song.
