uhh what?
movie piracy is already catching on. not only can you download videos in HD, but you can also stream them in DivX so that you don't have to wait for a download. both methods deliver great quality, not shaky cams.

so lemme get this straight. you didn't like Avatar, yet you're going to pay to watch it a 2nd time to try and "get" it?

it's really not that big of a deal, at least for theatrical releases. i for one would rather pay 10-15 bucks for a movie i really want to see in a theater rather than downloading a lower quality rip that was taken from a camcorder. DVD releases are an entirely different matter. if it's a movie i really like and want to keep i'll buy the Blu-Ray. if it's one i'll watch once and be done with it i'll download a rip from a torrent site
for me the trend seems to be no matter if it's movies, music, TV, or games. if a product is of high enough quality people will buy it instead of pirating. which to me is a good thing, since it encourages the developers and studios to try and raise the bar each time they release something

This is not a clear indication of how many people saw the movie. I would prefer if Hollywood would report tickets sold rather than how much money they made. Star Wars at $5 a ticket in the 70's has no chance against Avatar at $16-$25 a ticket in current day.

Does anyone know if the crowds are still overwhelming for IMAX 3D?

Saw the 11:45am show today. It was full. So, yes. If you don't buy tickets ahead of time you probably won't get 'em.

Yeah, I was there too, pretty full. I walked in at about 11:15 though and there were still tickets and plenty of seats. I hope you were not that goof that kept pulling out his phone every 10 minutes and distracting me
As for the 3D stuff, it took a few minutes to get used to. I don't know if it's just me or my contacts, but it's a little too blury and gives me a headache. But by about 30 minutes in, I didn't notice.
Overall, it was a pretty good movie. The general plot was pretty unoriginal though. Highlight: He could have done a better job of making the humans the 'good guys' before the switchover.

I, generally, don't like sci-fi films. I went to see Avatar (3-D) for my wife's birthday on Tuesday.
This could've been completely void of any story whatsoever and it would've been worth the $10 I paid to see it. Absolutely stunning visuals. I was blown away by what I saw.
And the movie wasn't bad either.

I disagree with 3 Justin 3 on basically everything he says (who sits in the front row for a 3D movie? Even the theatre staff advised me not to do that and come back for the later show since the one I went to was full except for front rows).
I watched this tonight and it was the first movie in years to ever affect me emotionally, to make me hold my breath, and feel genuinely moved and motivated. I sat there and I was shaking in a state of euphoria, near tears but happy instead. I am a very visual person though. When they showed the shot of that mountain city in the South American episode of Top Gear, I felt a sliver of what I felt watching Avatar.
Of course the story is predictable but I am a visual and musical aesthetic person. That is the most important thing to me in many aspects of life. It's also classic Cameron sci-fi with his specific anime-influnced style that he's been using very recognizably since Aliens. Think about all Cameron films. They are about human emotion, they are about visuals, they are about style. The actual background story is never an important point (Terminator, the Aliens, the Abyss, Terminator 2, Titanic, Avatar), it simply drives you to involve yourself emotionally in the characters.
You have to imagine at some point, that the marines of Avatar and the environmentally ruined earth and it's mega-corporations are related to the Colonial Marines and Weyland-Yutani corporation of Aliens. Cameron always creates these worlds where the backstory is left to your imagination and it's very powerful that way.
This is why movies like Blade Runner are my favorites, if you think about it, there is no real story there. What it is is art, it's creating a universe in your imagination.

Define mainstream. 3D is making big leaps this year... PS3/Blu-Ray goes 3D this year and whole whack of 3D TVs are coming out right now (at CES), and the US gets its first 3D channel. And hey, you could always become an early adopter!

You will never get more people to the the theatre to go see a modern movie than went to see Gone With The Wind (202 million tickets).
The closest anyone has come in the last 20 years is James Cameron with Titanic. (128 million tickets, 6th all-time adjusted)
The next closest in the last 20 years? Jurassic Park, 86.2 million tickets (17th).
Avatar has already sold 52.7 million tickets. Should climb the list somewhat.

It was actually 800 million tickets.
When Gone with the Wind was released in North America in 1939, it earned an astonishing $198.7-million when the average ticket price was only 23 cents. This translates into a total of more than 800 million admissions at a time when the combined population of the U.S. and Canada was about 145 million!

Unless the Globe and Mail is smoking something - actually that might be true because that statement means that almost everyone on the continent watched Gone with the Wind 4 times.
