Yeah, Everyone wants to see USC rest it's starters for the last two games because they are already in the playoffs.

I am not sure that this would be as big an issue in college football as it is in the NFL, as two losses are a lot more decisive in CFB then in the NFL.

You will not have teams clinching playoff spots, and the computer polls that help decide the top 8 teams (say if there was an 8 team playoff) will not know that that team decided to rest players in their last two games and if they end up losing they could be out of a playoff spot.

This season teams 7 through 11 were all two loss teams (before bowls), meaning that if a team did decide to rest its players, for the final two games, it is possible they will not end up being one of the top 8 teams. Also home field advantage is probably more important to CFB then NFL teams and they would not want to lose that advantage. Also the last regular season game for many of these schools is the conference championship game and I doubt schools would rest players in a game that would determine if they were conference champions, which happens to be a useful tool to use in recruiting.

Resting players is more common in the NFL because their is a greater separation of the records of teams then you see in CFB, and their is usually or one or two great teams per season, where in college you will usually have a couple undefeated teams and a few more with one loss making resting players more difficult.

While you can brush it off and just say yeah everybody wants to see players rest in final games, you can also say it would be nice to have these young kids who work their asses off all season get the fair opportunity to be crowned as national champions, not be dismissed because they play at a "small" non-bcs school.

Sorry, I'm not a Playoff fan at all. I like Bowl season and think its better than the 1-aa playoffs.

But it's not fair its not fair guess what life isn't fair. I am not a good hockey player does that mean I should cry about not being on the scf's team? NO. Same with these kids. It takes 3-4 years to get one of these mid majors football schools ready to play one game against the big boys. That one game they have a month to get ready for and pull every trick out in the book. Look I was pulling for BSU when they beat OU (sorry nick) but if those boys play a sched like USC or oregon or texas conference wise they wouldn't be even in the discussion.

majority of these kids are 1-2* players that go to BSU and just are not good enough to play on a big time squad like Texas, OSU, Oregon, UF, OU, USC, Bama.

But everyone is going to bitch and moan that "its just not fair" Go ahead and join the pac 10 or the big 12 or whatever and play the same conference schedule that the big boys play and see if they are undefeated at the end of the year. I would be willing to beat that both BSU or TCU played texas's sched or Bama's or USC's they wouldn't be undefeated.

We all saw what happend to a "weak" florida team that played the undefeated bearcats in the sugar bowl....

Do you even watch college football?

Boise State and TCU could and would hang with Alabama and Texas.

What?

You're the one talking about how great the NFL is because all these games have these huge playoff implications. Yet the reality is that most of these games at the end of the year are snoozers because the best teams already have their tickets to the playoffs sealed up. You can talk all you want about seeding, but go ask the Eagles (completely shut it down after they were down 14-0 early), Bengals (rested starters, hardly put in an effort), Cards (hardly played any starters on defense and rested Warner), and Pats (rested starters including Brady) about how important they think that is.

And it's not really one game here. Every year it's the same issues about how teams fighting for playoff berths are upset that teams are resting starters and have major effects on the playoff system. The time of year when the games should be the best turns into a joke. I don't understand how you think it's irrelevant that the Jets got lucky enough to draw the Colts in week 16 and beat their back-ups yet the Texans (who the Jets tied with) lost twice to the Colts when they actually had something to play for. Its not as if this is something new this season.

I really find it funny that you can't even admit that there's issues with a playoff system. Goodell and the NFL already have, but you can't.

Resting players would only really be an issue in a 16-team playoff. In that case, there's 3 and 4 loss teams making the playoffs and enough separation to allow for an extra loss. I'd agree it would not be a major issue in an 8-team playoff, which is simply another good reason any playoff system shouldn't jump over 8-teams.

Although the computers wouldn't factor in resting players, the human polls sure would. No voter in their right mind would put a 10-2 that rested players one game behind a 10-2 team that had to fight for their record.

And if anything the conference championship games would help with resting players. Look at how early this season Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Georgia Tech punched their tickets to their conference championship games. Obviously they don't want to lose too many games resting players, but the final week Texas/A&M and Bama/Auburn games are definitely times to rest players.

i find it funny you would claim this since i have never spoken anything of the sort.

And if you dont think there were MANY games on Sunday that mattered...you arent watching. The Steelers/Dolphins game was great and had all kinds of implications, the Texans/Pats same thing, even the Eagles/Boys game had massive ramifications and you claiming they shut it down is a complete falsity, they played all their starters til the very end.

As for the rest of your nattering...same old same old. Its all hogwash imo.

You haven't said anything of the sort yet you're fiercely arguing about how great these last few NFL weekends are when if you turn on ESPN radio on Monday all you hear is complaining about teams shutting it down.

The same Texans/Pats game that saw Brian Hoyer take over for Tom Brady in the 3rd quarter? I know when I was watching that Texas/Texas A&M shootout the week before the Big 12 Title game I was hoping that the Longhorns would take out Colt McCoy so I could watch Garrett Gilbert strut his stuff.

And I guess the difference between 4th and 5th in the conference means different things to different people. To me it's pretty meh. To you it's "massive ramifications". And yes the Eagles shut it down - that's pretty much common knowledge. They may not have rested starters, but does the word vanilla mean anything to you? That describes the Eagles gameplan after they went down 14-0. Hey, they would've liked a home playoff game, but they're not going to go all out and give up their gameplan to get it.

I really like how the "true National Champion" guy is the same one who is going crazy for all these seeding games in the NFL. If a team really is the best in the country (or league), shouldn't it not matter where or when they play in the playoffs? Seems to me a 12-16 team playoff doesn't decide the best team - only the best team in January.

Hoyer didn't take over in the third quarter. He played the last 3 minutes or so of the first half and then came in with two minutes left in the fourth.

Uhhh...it meant the difference between 2nd and 6th for Philly. It meant a week off and hosting a home game or travelling back to Dallas this Sunday.

But dont let facts get in your way.

The playoffs started LAST week for many of these teams...so there was a ton on the line, and the fact that as many as 6 teams were vying for 2 spots on Sunday is testament to that...wouldnt you?

And are you serious that it shouldnt matter where a game is played? Yeah...its never a benefit to play at home.

Uh, I never said that.

I simply said that if seeding is so important to the playoff picture then it really isn't determining the best team. Only the team who was fortunate enough to get the best match-ups (which is often the case).

Joe Paterno wants a playoff

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4768822

Mack Brown wants a playoff

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/colle...eary-of-it-all

Pete Carroll wants a playoff

http://www.collegenews.com/index.php...playoffs_0751/

Steve Spurrier is in favor of a playoff format.

Quote:
Spurrier said Obama’s public pressure could give the playoff idea momentum.
“We have playoffs in every sport in the world, I think, except college football,” Spurrier said. “I used to say, ‘How can we be right and everybody else be wrong?’”
http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/steve-spurrier/

Bob Stoops in favor of a playoff.

Quote:
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said one reason he now favors a playoffs is fewer BCS schools will finish undefeated.

"In past years there’s only been two undefeated teams. It was a little clear,” Stoops said. "Lately it seems it’s not (as clear). There’s more and more parity. It’s more and more difficult to discern who should (play for the national title). For a lot of reasons, I’m leaning more and more towards we ought to find a way to do it on the field.”

http://www.newsok.com/article/332292...m_click=search

And on and on it goes.

If the guys at the top of where football games/champions are decidedly for a playoff, then doesnt it stand to reason it really should be something that happens?

I realize these guys arent the ones to make the decisions, but they certainly are a lot more qualified than Chancellor X from school anonamous is.

The only guy i looked up that is against it is Nick Saban. Im sure there are others but these guys are the ones who are there year after year.

Im sure if we checked with Peterson on Boise or Patterson in TCU or Mendenhall at BYU, they would also all favor a playoff system.

I just do not understand why any fans of the game would be opposed, i get why the moneymen are against it, but most everyone actually associated with the game on the field wants one as it, again, is the only major sport in North America that doesnt have one...and that is just plain goofy no matter what.

Maybe i am mis-interpreting. I dont believe so however.

I suspect then that you care not if the Flames finish 8th or 3rd, as home ice shouldnt matter but moreso some "favorable match up" is more important?

Weird thing is Patterson said he didn't want a playoff. He would have benefitted the most by having one. Playing on the field is the only way to come up with a champion. I won't be watching the Bama/Texas game as a matter of principle. One of those teams can claim to be the mythical champ but neither is champ, in my mind it is undecided.

Pre-season polls are a joke also.

Can't wait to watch the Texas vs Alabama game tonight.
Was in Dallas a month ago for the Thanksgiving Game Cowboys v Raiders.
That night Texas played Texas A&M. Man now I understand why Texas is football crazy.
Watching the game amongst Texas v Texas A&M fans was a blast.

I fully agree, and i love how on the pre AND post game show for the Fiesta Bowl, they discussed how Boise shouldn't get a share of the NC because of their strength of schedule, and then discussed how none of the big programs will schedule them out of fear of a tough game/loss...hmmmmmmmm, interesting. As far as I'm concerned, with this system, BSU deserves at least a share of the "national championship"
