Best Sushi Place In Town?

In Calgary, I find Sushi Zipang or Zen 8 to have the best stuff . . . The owner of Zen 8 imports some of his fish straight from Japan, and I'm a big fan of that.

Although Vancouver sucks for most things,they have some of the best sushi in the world. Rivaling Tokyo!

Actually my opinion is skewed since I've been to the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo numerous times, the mecca of all sushi places. Nothing around even comes close unfortunately

I went to to a place on Broadway where people were biting the heads off live prawns. That's fresh sushi!

Shikiji, Wa's, Momoyama and Globefish.

Globefish is totally over rated. It's beside my house and I hardly ever go.....I'd rather go to the Japanese Fusion place across the street (on 33rd).

Sushi Towa on 4th is awesome. Be warned though, the rolls are huge, so you don't need to order as many as the other sushi joints.

Hanna sushi on 37th street/Bow trail is another good one.

It depends what you like. There are many different styles of sushi in this city now. Globefish I would classify more as an Izakaya than a sushi restaurant. They do serve some sushi, and it is an excellent place to eat, but their strength really lies in their special rolls and Izakaya items.

To anyone who still enjoys Edo, Food Court, and Superstore sushi, please try and get out to some real sushi restaurants. Once you have good sushi you will never be able to eat that crap again.

This doesnt make me an expert by any means, but if it means anything, I am of Japanese heritage, family lives in Tokyo now, been there many times. If you want the very best you need to go to Southern Japan on the coast.

However, in Calgary I always go to Shikiji. Quality is very good there. Still Japanese operated unlike a lot of Sushi places now.

If you're looking for inexpensive, then Sushi Boat in Crowfoot is not bad. They own Towa.

Zipang, Wa's, Shikiji are my top 3 for now. Sukiyaki house would get more consideration if it wasn't so expensive.

I haven't been to Misato's in a while but when I did go there regularly, it was in my top 3.

Wa's has been declining, I haven't been there as often so maybe it's just been off days when I've been.

Zipang is still top notch if a touch expensive.

Sukiyaki house was very good the 1 and only time I was there but it was so bloody expensive that I haven't been back. The fish was VERY fresh when I went.

I've been too, and certainly for traditional Japanese sushi - nigiri or sashimi it's unparalleled. Although, I do really like the north americanized really elaborate rolls as well. Globefish's crazy buster roll is one of the best things I've ever tasted, you don't really find rolls like that at Tsukiji.

I love globefish ... I'm more of a roll fan. I realize big time sushi aficionados will scoff at us, but I'm in agreement with the OP, for fast food sushi Edo is pretty impressive (imo).

I also really like Kenjo. Truthfully I've only been to 3 actual sushi restaurants. I tried Sushi Ichiban on macleod for the all you can eat one night. It was quite good, but I don't feel the urge to go back.

Zipang is good! they hold up their quality pretty high, 2 years ago, during the boom, they could not hire a chef or frontdesk people, they actually closed down for portions of business hours. i phoned up to book a table, the boss said he would not settle to hire people to get quick cash or were trying to mail it in.

one thing you have to try in japanese cuisine is Ramen. there are not a lot of places offer but seriously if you do find good ones, chances are they have good sushi as well.

For those of you in Vancouver, try out Kintaro, just in Coal Harbour a block east of the north end of Robson - best Ramen in Canada, hands down, and almost exactly the way they serve it in Japan.

Well I'm certainly going to scratch this restaurant off my list.... particularly considering that the sanitary conditions were so bad that Calgary Health Region closed them down in February 2009.
