Looks like Avatar was underestimated for the weekend. It will go on to make about $67 million, bringing its total domestic gross to: ~$350.5 million.
Estimated total worldwide gross: ~$1.05 BILLION in just 17 days.

Avatar was a good movie, I won't deny I enjoyed it, but it was too long, and Act 2 was BORING BORING BORING.
District 9 is a hard movie to compare it too because you either think it is brilliant (me), or you think it sucks (probably because people don't understand the concept), not to mention it isn't an action movie, which Avatar is.
Just read a few posts above me about the Grammys. IMO, Inglorious Basterds should win over this.

Heh... This could go on for months because we are just exchanging shots based on our opinions. My opinion is that Avatar is better than District 9. Your opinion is that District 9 is better than Avatar.
I also have seen Avatar 3 times and like the whole thing. I don't find any part of it boring but I understand that my view of Avatar and my perceptions of it are not going to be the same as everyone else.
To each their own.
In terms of people liking Avatar more, I would humbly submit that the box office numbers for Avatar could ONLY have been driven by stellar word-of-mouth.
I watch the box office very closely and I have never seen the kind of pattern that Avatar has forged. It has only dropped about 13% from its 1st weekend to its 3rd weekend. That is amazing.
I would also submit the results of user votes on IMDb, which now total about 100,000 with an average vote of 8.8/10. 8.6/10 (91% positive) on Rotten Tomatoes on ~ 7,000 votes. 8.4/10 on Metacritic on ~600 votes.
District 9 has 8.4/10 on ~ 100,000 votes on IMDb. 8.3/10 (90% positive) on ~7000 votes on Rotten Tomatoes. 7.8/10 on ~650 votes on Metacritic.
Based on that you have to say that people like Avatar at LEAST as much as they like District 9, if not more.
But... still, at the end of the day this is all just flipping opinions back and forth at each other.

That movie was amazing for the mid 90s. It was an awe inspiring ride from the soundtrack, to the special effects, to the love story.

Titantic didn't make that much money when adjusted for inflation it's not the highest grossing film of all time.

inflation adjusted costs
Edit: I stand corrected:
http://most-expensive.net/top-5-movies
wikipedia seems more accurate because of the inclusion of older movies (which is why one would account for inflation). But doesn't include Avatar which seems to be the most with estimates putting it at $500 mill

One thing I noticed is that Avatar isn't doing nearly as much for its stars as titanic did. I can't name anyone in Avatar besides Michelle Rodriguez and Segourny Weaver (no clue ho to spell that) and I knew them before Avatar.
Titanic made Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslit the biggest stars on the planet. Especially Leo. Winslit showed her titties so maybe thats why she hit superstardom

Giovanni Ribisi, Sam Worthington is becoming the new 'genre it boy'. That guy from Bones. Zoe Saldana is pretty well known too.

Gotta love the "you probably didn't like District 9 because it went over your head" attitude. Kinda reminds me of the time I was told I'm not a huge fan of Nickelback becaue I "don't understand good music". District 9 wasn't a bad movie by any stretch IMO, but let's tone down the ###### shall we?

I really don't see that as a KEY scene.....

Totally agree. That was one of things I commented to my wife about, was that I liked how they left out him taking control of it as that would have been an unnecessary scene.
Loved the movie. The 3D wasn't mind blowing, but I don't think it was intended to be. I think it was just supposed to add depth to the cinematography. Curious to see how it will be in non-3D and whether it will feel like there is something missing.

Yeah but no where even remotely close compared to Leonardo Dicaprio in the late 90's.

lol DJ patm, you joined in December, either you are afraid to let your main be associated with not liking avatar or you conveniently joined to dislike avatar.
Anyhow, science hat on.
Neuroscience, my field, shows us that the tie that binds music to emotion is strong, duh. But that Music is as tied to personal experience as movies, art or anything ethereal.
While someone to the deepest of their soul praises the rolling stones, another to the deepest of their soul despises their sound.
Point being, mood, preconception of the film, religious attitude, political attitude, all have major contributor to how someone views a film.
Avatar is art, how you view it is more about you than it is about the film.
btw, Neuroscience is amazing, study it before you miss out on the coolness.

I don't understand this whole climate change thing.. Pandora's atmosphere was chalked full of CO2 and look how beautiful it is! Quick, everyone go idle your car for a hour, let the transformation begin!
Great movie, really enjoyed it. It had some cheesy parts and bad acting in others, but that is a James Cameron film for you.. at the same time you are still blown away.
I really thought they could have utilized the 3D more though.

Don't forget the part where the guy falls off the ship into the propeller.
That Celine Dion song is one of the five worst songs of all time, in my personal view though.

I wonder if Hollywood will take away the lesson in all this. You can whine about movie piracy all you want, but if you put something on the screen worth showing people will pay to see it.

Movie piracy won't catch on until movies can be downloaded by the majority of people as quick songs can and in HD quality, without stupid shaking or cutting off the screen

This movie won't be as enjoyable with the lack of 3D effects. It's a shame that 3D TV's won't become mainstream for a while.

This is not a clear indication of how many people saw the movie. I would prefer if Hollywood would report tickets sold rather than how much money they made. Star Wars at $5 a ticket in the 70's has no chance against Avatar at $16-$25 a ticket in current day.
I had no interest in seeing Avatar when it came out. I did go with my wife, as long as we saw it in 3D. I didn't find the 3D to be popping out closer to me, but I did find the movie to have depth. I still wasn't sold on the movie walking out. It was the most amazing looking movie I had ever seen, but the story, for me, left a lot to desire, and could have been tightened up.
Having said that, after seeing the film, I saw the trailer again on TV, and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Knowing what it is, to go in with an open mind to the story. The compairisons and the effect are distracting. I may give it another shot.
