Here in BC minimum wage is sitting at 8 dollars an hour, curious what it is in Alberta?

Who the hell makes minimum wage anymore?
Frikkin Tim Hortons will pay you over $10/hr. You have to actually TRY to make minimum wage these days... yeish...

Here in the bridge, all food chains/restaurants will start you off at $5.90. Cheapo's won't even give you the extra 10 cents to make it $6 even.

When are the Conservatives going to up the mininum to $7 an hour? They announced it when the released their last budge but I don't think its passed yet. I still make $6.25 at my PT job (one that I haven't worked at since May though)

This is mostly going to affect Waiters and Waitresses. They get paid the Min because they make most of their cash on tips.
Sorry to hear about that GQ, I mean friggen McDonalds/Wendys on Macleod trail are advertising to pay 7-7.50 starting.

I have seen numerous Tim Hortons offering $10 day shift/$11 night shift to start.
Lethbridge (and small towns) are a different story. The cost of living is also usually much less.

I am not sure if you are being serious or just making a point?
In all seriousness, my father is a janitor (a job that i got him), and he makes just over $12/hr (to start).
I am certainly not some insensitive rich kid, i was just stating facts... sometimes people need a hand-up to see the potential but in Calgary it is pretty frikkin easy to find if you make an effort to find it.

I'm just making a point that these sorts of jobs exist and you can end up in them. My father was laid off from his salaried job in the seismic industry and he ended up working at Safeway for $7.50/hr.
I'm sure he could do better if he tried. But he says he'll just do this for awhile.

Ah, minimum wage.
Nothing tells you that your employer values you like getting paid minimum wage.
Basically, the employer is saying "I'd pay you less but it's against the law."

In the year I worked at Superstore 3 years ago... I got 3 raises... from $7.50 to a whopping $7.77
Pathetic.
But they have a great dental plan so when I had to get a crown I told 'em, Put on solid gold!

A lot of retail jobs still pay minimum wage, without commission (if you're a cashier or something). I know a few guys that work in board shops around town that get paid min. wage (plus commission), but do it "for the lifestyle, man". Guys with degrees too (one is an engineer).
So yeah, there are people still paying it.

My question in regards to min. wage is: How the hell do you afford to live off of it? Unless you're at home with mom and dad, it makes no sense to me.

Easy: You steal. Lots.
I've always contened that an employee that feels like he's getting cheated is going to turn around and do the same to you, but twice over.

Currently in the grocery department Superstore starts around $8.50 and moves all the way up to around $18.

I've done it living on my own before. It's certainly not easy, and student loans that barely cover tuition certainly don't help that much. I worked in retail, so it probably would not have been beneficial to my financial situation to steal clothes... I might have been well dressed, but still hungry. It's possible to live off minimum wage, usually with a roommate though, and you certainly learn to budget that way...
