Honestly Star Trek is my favourite movie of the year, and I think my favourite movie since Lord of the Rings.

Spoilers for the next movie don't page down if you don't want to see it. the next story line involves time travel, the Enterprise travels back to collect earths greatest leaders and historical figures for a presentation to Star Fleet Academy on what past historical figures would think of modern day San Demos

somehow in a comedy twist Abraham Lincoln ends up in command of the Enterprise

Considering how little I've cared about anything to do with Star Trek over the years, it was fairly easy for me to appreciate this movie for what it was:

Something new.

(It was an awesome flick, and I hope they do another one.)

Sorry to bump an ancient thread but I thought it might be a little early to start the Star Trek 2 thread.

Star Trek 2 has a tentative release date of June 29th, 2012. This specific date was chosen because of its proximity to the 4th of July weekend in the US.

Originally Paramount had hoped to release it in Summer 2011 but that meant it was unlikely that JJ Abrams would be able to return as director due to a busy schedule. Moving the movie to Summer 2012 increases the chances Abrams can return in that capacity.

Abrams mentioned that he thought there were too many lens flares when he went back and watched it but because of the way they were done, they could not be removed. You will probably see less of that in the next movie.

... and besides that, Abrams made a wicked Star Trek movie. I am SO glad he is coming back. Great director.

Been there. Done that.

The idea is totally egregious.

As for the sequel, I really don't want to see Khan. I don't want retreads or remakes. I want original stories. Star Trek movies have the problem of always having to put earth in jeopardy to make a good film, otherwise it doesn't seem epic to the producers. They need to take a page from Avatar and learn to create an amazing universe worthy of boldly going into.

This is really tiring:

To be fair Khan said nothing about actually going after Earth. His really just wanted to kill Kirk. Joachim said he, we have Genesis, we have the Reliant, lets go live our lives. Khan stated he didn't give a frack, he wanted to beat Kirk.

Khan was awesome, nasty and revengeful but I doubt he wanted to destroy earth. If you go back to space seed he saw himself as the savior of mankind and the strong leader that would give humanity order.

He'd probably go to earth and threaten it with genesis but I doubt he had plans to destroy it.

They gave that a try. It's called Star Trek: Insurrection. I haven't seen Avatar yet but the premise of the two sound similar.

Because of the change in the timeline (story arc) from the first one there should be no similarities with this new set of movies than with the old set - other than kirk getting it on with all manner of strange alien creatures.

Everything has changed, why even bother with Kahn and the Shakespeare references.

Nope. However Kruge was more inclined to use it against Earth than the random assertion that Khan was going to fire it at Earth.

I agree that they should stay away from Khan. However I think the reason deep down I prefer Star Trek II is because it is equal parts King Lear, Paradise Lost and Moby Dick. I enjoy and like the new movie, it doesn't have the layers.

Edit: Than again none of the other moves (save perhaps The Undiscovered Country which was just a Cold War ending allegory) had the layers so. Or tried to and failed. So I'm probably making something out of nothing.

I watched the new movie last night and I thought it was great. Uhh... that's all I have to say really. Nothing deep or analytical.

Go see Avatar. Sorry issues aside it at least feels like a movie. Not a TNG television episode. I don't see where you're drawing the Insurrection parallels.

I just saw this the other day. Great movie. I am a bit of a Trekkie. I really enjoy the original series as it is probably my favorite.

I thought this would be a huge dishonour but it was really well done! It was great how the characters were easily recognizable and their traits were very similar to the OS. The altered timeline kind of through me for a bit of a loop, but once you let that part go it is awesome.

Great movie and I can't wait to see number 2.
