I saw Rural Alberta Advantage's first show in Alberta. They could use another member to fill out their sound, but all and all they were very impressive.
From Calgary check out Woodpigeon who i would draw comparisons to Arcade Fire and Chad VanGaalen who was nominated for the Polaris prize this year and, at least to me, is reminiscent of Neil Young.
Sonic Youth - The Eternal Modest Mouse - No One's First, And Your Next Grant Hart - Hot Wax Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca Raveonettes - In And Out Of Control Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz Metric - Fantasies Dead Weather - Horehound

The Cribs - Ignore the Ignorant
Fevor Ray - Fevor Ray

These are some of the albums this year I like, that I dont think have been mentioned.

I hate Chad VanGaalen and his stupid hipster wimpy voice. Gosh, the disdain I feel for this man is so great.
What constitutes being a hipster?
I wasnt a fan either till his latest album. The song writing is probably as strong as before but his old one became quite dreary after 17 songs. Soft Airplane is fantastic though, and i think he should have won the Polaris.

Ah! That's one I forgot!
Remembered another one:
Green Go - Borders

I saw him at a folk fest workshop and the way he was carrying on with the language and wanna-be ironic quips was just too much. Not to mention his diatribe on oral sex in front of a crowd of families just rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm with you man. Chad VanGaalen is one of the most annoying guys I've ever heard.
Albums that I've bought this year that I really like, in no particular order:
The Thermals - Now we can see
Mother Mother - O My Heart
Joel Plaskett - Three
Hey Rosetta - Into your lungs
Elliot Brood - Mountain Meadows
-The Temper Trap
-Hayden
-The Big Pink
-Grizzly Bear

Some comments on some of these, just my opinion, which might not be worth anything.
The Temper Trap - seem to be all the rage in UK. I have no idea why. Another overhyped media sensation I think. These bands are a dime a dozen these days, and its annoying. No different than rappers who keep using autotune.
Hayden - One of the best songwriters in Canada, always consistent, always makes good/great records. This guy is awesome, I'll always get his records.
The Big Pink - horrible. One of the suckiest records I've ever heard. Downloaded from emusic based on some positive reviews and will delete it. You can enhance your ipod experience by doing the same.
Grizzly Bear - amazing. Veckatimest is my favourite album of the year. These guys deserve the press.
One of my other favourites this year..Monsters of Folk. Made up of M. Ward, Jim James, and Conor Oberst. I am usually skeptical of "supergroups" but these guys made a great record. Saw them live and they killed it.
