Default Anyone else starting to find NHL 2010 a little unbearable to play?

I'm starting to get really frustrated with the poke checking. Sure we all do it, but man it's ridiculous. Anytime you play anyone with any amount of skill, it's just brutal. To me, NHL 2010 is essentially just a button-mash game. Whoever hits L2 the most wins. It's also incredibly frustrating playing a weaker opponent because they take 30 tripping penalties a game meaning it takes 1 hour to play a game. Some of the techies at EA should figure out for next year that hockey isn't played with one hand on the sticking, jabbing it in and out for 60 minutes.

It's a loophole. Almost any game I have played online there is someone that knows how to 'cheat' the game in someway.

I don't think the pokechecking is a loophole persay becaue it's not like you have to learn how to do or require any special skill to perform the move. It's just ridiculous how effective it is. Completely ruining the game if you ask me. It seems it gets worse every week online.

Some people are good at it, others aren't and you can just go around them. I don't really mind it, but I stopped using it too much since I started getting a lot of penalties.

And if you go around them they trip you 50% of the time, and end up spending an hour playing a 5 minute period game.

I found NHL online unbearable from 08. But it is like any sports game, everyone just wants the win so they cheat or cheese. I only play Online Team Play because of it, I hate ranked games. That and I find the AI just complete garbage online. The problem with Online Team Play though is no one passes, and no one plays positional hockey. But it is better than Ranked VS games.

It pisses me off on the amount some players poke check and lift your stick up. So unbearable that you can't even play. I know it is a sign of poor sportsmanship but when that happens, I quit the game.

it's weird, i'm a huge hockey fan, big video game nerd, and loved pretty much every previous iteration of the NHL games. but when i picked up my pre-order of NHL 10 when it came out, i played it for maybe 5 minutes and haven't touched it since. i think i've finally become burnt out on the NHL games, and the fact that NHL 10 is so slowed down with the board play and stick work doesn't do anything to help that

I think the stick lift is far worse...it gets ridiculous if you've got good reflexes going..tick..stick lift..so you stick lift right back..tick...tick..tick It's silly.

But there are much bigger issues in my opinion:

1. When was the last time you dumped the puck and actually beat the D to it. This would be an effective way of beating the poke checkers, but its almost impossible to execute in my experience.

2. Why can can the D skate backwards and maintain perfect positioning on a forward gaining the zone. It's ridiculous how much lateral mobility the D has while skating backwards. Granted, it works in both directions (your D is mobile too), but still...

3. Gaining the zone can be ridiculous because of the AI. You get the entire teams lined up with no forward speed across the blue line, and you can literally go back and forth behind them all looking for a way to get across. In the meantime, none of the CPU players move or do anything to adjust. It looks like the line of scrimmage in football.

4. The AI players are clueless about where you are - they will impede your progress, aimlessly collide with you, drift on awful diagonals across the zone taking 20 seconds to get back onside, etc. My favorite is when you are behind your own net, and somewhere, far far above you, there's a player still offside. Entire plays can develop in your own end and you still see the offside warning, because buddy isn't smart enough to leave the zone.

My biggest pet peeve though, is that the switch player logic seems totally messed up compared to last year. So many times, it seems like the game fails to select your player closest to the puck when you hit switch player, and instead you find yourself controlling some guy randomly on the other side of the ice, or two players away from the play at the puck.

Maybe its time to sell NHL 10 and give the other NHL game a shot, just to mix things up..

I just don't think they award enough penalty shots in a game. I'm only averaging about 3 or 4. That just seems low.

I never played NHL 08 or 09, so I have nothing to compare 10 to other than NHL98, which was the last one I owned haha. NHL 10 is probably the most exciting video games I've ever played. The poke checking was frustrating at first, but with good passing and stick moves you can usually get around it and the other guy finds himself out of position.

I agree it is a bit of a button mash game, especially on defence, but since my vidskillzzz aren't really on par, it works for me.

Is there a way you can check to see how many online games you've played in total?

It is a great game but with lots of flaws:
- The computer scores too easily when you don't play online, they get easy rebounds and snipe shots from anywhere. It's really annoying.
- I hate how the computer is much better than your AI. They are always positionally sound, faster, score more, hit more, absorb more hits and are better in every way.

Keep on posting what things you find wrong with the game and things you would like to see fixed or added for NHL 11 since this would be a good feedback time.

I stopped playing online last year because most of your opponents are just annoying as hell.

I'm more frustrated with trying to score. I make beautiful cross crease passes and one timers but the goalie is always there to make the save.

Still haven't figured out how to consistantly get more than 1 or 2 goals per game.

Watching real hockey, if a player has a clear shot, in the slot, in the modern NHL, there is a really high chance of a goal, that is why teams defend against it.

I think the major flaw in the game, and it has been for as long as I can remember, is that not enough wrist shots from the slot find their way into the net.

What I mean is, I'm playing online, and I do it too, but my opponents know that the goalie is golden for the save, so there is little to no effort to block shot or get in the shooting lanes. Instead, they just collapse and prevent any down low plays.

The problem with this is that the game overly rewards the down low play and the skate across the crease faster than the goalie plays. It is almost impossible to score form the slot, but way too easy to score from terrible angles just because you are close to the net.

The gameplay suffers because there is no danger in leaving the slot open, and thus, it leads to repetative gameplay.

The worst is when you are playing VS. online and some punk won't even try anything else other than wrap arounds and side of net hacks. I usually quit on these types of rediculous players.

Agreed with the scoring chance thing. I consistently get shots I consider to be excellent scoring opportunities and I feel like I NEVER score on them.

But if I force ugly passes across crease it turns to gold.

I feel like I can be annoying to play against because I do what works in the game, not proper hockey.

edit: ooh yea, dump a chase = turnover. Why would you focus on this sweet new aspect of the game (board play) when the only useful strategic application is impossible to execute?

To get around the poke check usage they really need an alex Burrows button. If the player tries to poke check you hit the button and do a spectacular dive with all of your equipment flying off.

If he tries a stick lift and you hit the Burrows button your head flings back, you toss your gloves and hit the ice while looking for a cut.

So agreed. I was really excited when I watched the promos for the new board play and dump and chase, but then I quickly realized that I would never win a race for the puck. I have my d-man dump the puck, and then I watch as my wingers just sort of stand around at the blueline. So frustrating.

In general, the AI stands around way too much. Passing through the neutral zone is pointless because none of the players are skating. Every time I pass to a player, they are standing still when they receive the puck. all I want if for my trailer to come blazing into the zone at full speed, onto a puck, for a quick shot from the slot that rips past the goalie.

Instead, I try for impossible one-timers.

One of the biggest problems with this online play is shootouts. Why did they change it so you have to be the goalie? It takes all the excitement out of the shootout since you and your opponent are both brutal at goalie.
I find I win the majority of shootouts, but you don't really care since you know it's mostly just luck. Bring back how it was in 09 and it would be a lot more exciting.

But it wouldn't matter because like most hockey video games, the AI really steps it up when penalty killing. When I play 5-5, gaining the zone is 1000X easier than on the powerplay. Oh, and winning an offensive zone faceoff on the powerplay, good luck.

The game gives a boost to the PK team. If anything, I feel I have a better chance of scoring on the PK than on the PP.

Thus, their is no risk or reward with penalties in the game. All they do is make online games take a freakin hour to play.
