There might be a family outing for us this weekend as well. Sweet! Road trip! My Dad and my wife's parents live in the NW, a perfect excuse ...

You're describing a separate project, also a very important one, IMO.
Harvest Hills /Stoney Interchange is the one I was talking about. The 96th Ave Connector to Deerfoot (the one you are talking about) will increase connectivity a great deal.

I already drove on the new section of the ring road, blasting the German techno music from Super Troopers in the car. The East section has got to be the longest perfectly straight freeway road. Amazing!

In Calgary? You'd think they'd toss in some pointless curves to hide the multanovas.

I love the downhill back stretch going East bound on stoney in behind Citadel/Hamptons... Perfectly straight downhill road... Starting at the top of that hill at around 110, throw it in neutral, by the bottom of the hill, I hit 130 - 140 on most days... That's WITHOUT giving it any gas down the hill... AT ALL...
From the top of the Sarcee on ramp, I hit about 100, throw it in neutral, go down hill, I can go all the way to the lights on Beddington and Hanson Ranch without ever giving it gas or tying up traffic.

This is good this means I can avoid getting lost in Calgary this weekend. We have to go all the way from the North End (from the new giant mall) to the very south end of town.. close to rush hour time. Any tips?

I think they need to do something to the merge lane from Stoney Tr eastbound -> Highway 2 northbound. It seemed like the lane just ends really quick while you're trying to merge.

Your best bet is still likely Deerfoot. You may hit traffic snarls, but the ring road won't take you down to the deepsouth. You'd then have to traverse 17th ave SE just to get back to deerfoot, anyways.

Same with westbound to Hwy 2 Northbound. Very little merge distance. I don't think they are done with that portion yet, and are waiting to finish the new exit to CrossIron Mills before finalizing that side.

Oh man! Took this today and was a little caught off guard by the merge distance. That's not much space at all at 130 km/h joking
You guys are talking about the same merge lane FYI. Eastbound and Westbound Stoney merge onto Deerfoot at the same spot.

Does anyone know what's going on at 16th Ave? The offramp from southbound Stoney Tr exits after the turnoff for 68th St south. Is it going to stay that way? I've already had to deal with a couple of idiots stopping to turn left at the lights because they missed the turning lane.

Ah, I see... damn those funky Engineers that have merge lanes merge into a merge lane before a merge lane.

i don't understand why they moved that left turn lane so far up the road, what's the point? they've been screwing with that intersection for quite awhile now, and combined with the stoney trail construction it's made my daily commute more of a PITA. and yet after all that work i can't tell what the purpose is

On the news just now, they were talking about the SW portion of the RR. They said that there's three options:
1. 37th Street
2. widen 14th street and use anderson as a connector
3. McLeod freaking trail
WTF? As far as I'm concerned, there is only one option. 37th Street. I don't know how they can even consider 14th street and McLeod trail when dangerous goods aren't allowed over the reservoir. And isn't the point of a ring road to keep traffic that is not stopping in your city from having to bumble around inside your city?
I can't believe they're even entertaining either idea. Then they interviewed someone from the community of Eagle Ridge who balked at the idea of 14th being widened (because it would mean expropriation of some houses out of Eagle Ridge) and he basically said what everyone is thinking: it's one of the nicest neighbourhoods in town, why would you take out some of those houses for a road?
Anyway, this is getting ridiculous. I don't use the word flabbergasted very often, but I was fricken flabbergasted when they brought up 14 or McLeod. Stupidest ideas ever.
On a purely selfish note, I'm kinda glad the TsuuTina rejected the original plan. I personally like the idea of 37th being extended. It'll be much more useful - to me.
Plus I bet that even if we build the 37th street extension, in 20 years the negotiations get re-opened and we eventually get our road. Then we'll have 37th and Stoney.

^ I really can't see 14th or McLeod being used, but at the same time, I think people's expectations need to be taken down a few notches. I've heard people speculate about an 8 lane superhighway up 37th and 200+ homes being demolished. Consider, perhaps, that what we might end up with is 2 lanes in each direction, minimal number of homes demolished, and an interchange at Glenmore that is on the modest scale of Glenmore & Crowchild.

I think that 2 lanes each direction would be adequate. If planned properly, it can always be expanded as necessary. Plus the interchange at 37th and glemnore, and suddenly the SW's traffic woes are eased considerably. Unfortunately, the speed limit on 37th likely wont be higher than 80, plus there'll be lights. But that's ok. That road will do wonders for the west side of the city.
