First thing I do when I get to work is get a coffee/tea and take a few minutes to read some news websites. I guess its the same thing but just in front of a computer. Heck most of the time I get my news from Calgarypuck. Newspapers are obsolete.

I like newspapers. In fact, I just signed up for a full subscription to one (National Post? Blech. Globe and Mail for me), and have been getting Sat subscription before that. And I am young, read the internet for the news, etc etc. Electronic reader thingies just aren't the same thing either for me.
Go newspaper. Yah.

I like the Sunday New York Times for the obscure and artsy-fartsy stuff.

I honestly love getting the paper and I read it daily with a coffee first thing. The internet and TV are great...but there are just things that I find in the paper that I would otherwise miss. Not only that but 3/4 of the TV news just refers you somewhere else to get the full story anyway!
I know that I'm a dinosaur in that respect. I also know that in 10 years my kids will be amazed that some fools printed a book everyday and paid someone to throw it onto my doorstep everyday! But I just like a cup of coffee and a new newspaper.

I actually love doing that. The thing is at school I don't have a paper subscription as I don't have time to read it. And I can only really do that at home on weekends.

I'm sad that this is going, and I'm sad that Gourmet magazine is stopping too.

I agree ! I loved seeing Gourmet come through the mail. And yeah I did read a customer's copy during my lunch. Such a well-done elegant zine.

I have really never read the newspaper more than just the front page or the odd story. Perhaps I got an overload from my dad who would read the paper front to back and read out stories. Sorry, I was a teen, I just didn't care about such in such. Now I am one of the bad who gets my news from TV and primarily from the internets. The newspaper is a good vehicle for transporting flyers. (ducks)

Yeah, I read the Calgary Herald for free, otherwise known as the local AP/CP aggregator.
No way would I pay for it. Not enough local content, their reporters seem to be totally out of touch with Calgary (look at the stories that make FFWD that don't exist for the Herald), their articles still have horrible, horrible grammar and spelling mistakes, their op-eds are simplistic and naive, and their business section is run by a bunch of sycophants catering to the corporations in town.

I've always envisioned something like this sitting on a kitchen table each morning, already updated with the a daily news edition. It just seems to be a natural progression. The world doesn't run on paper anymore.
As for the original topic, the National Post never seemed to be worth subscribing too. The Globe and Mail is a fair superior news service. Great new website too.

I am pretty much there already. I usually do the same thing, just on my iPhone. I have all the local papers mobile sites linked, along with the globe and mail and CNN and it pretty much gives me the news fix I need. Streamlined, to the point, and without the fluff and very little adverstising.

My biggest concern with the downturn in the newspaper industry is that the journalists that would have been out there sniffing out the big stories about corruption, greed, abuse of power, etc are not going to be there. Journalists were given the time and resources to go after big stories and bring down powerful people that were abusing their position. Journalists were one of the checks and balances in society to ensure things like Watergate didn't go unnoticed. Now our newspapers print whatever AP will send them and nothing more.

When I was in undergrad one year the university had newspaper stands of free National Posts. I think it was the year after the launched.
I loved thumbing through it in between periods, if for nothing else to see what's up.
Now I go through the Thomson-Reuters Blackberry App daily. I do with there was one that was more Canadian based, but I can't be bothered to take the 3 seconds to look.

The U of C Business Library gives out free copies of both the National Post and the Globe & Mail. I used to grab a copy of each for its comics and crossword puzzles.

Well like all thing the industry changes or it dies. Newpapers have been run the same way for 300 years. Newpapers may die but the news industry will develop into something more relevant.

i.e.: blogging.
As far as the National Post goes, I wonder how long before it goes into an online only format? I expect the paper version dies either way.
