Default GAME 16: BATTLE OF ALBERTA - Part IV

It's the Battle of Alberta again in the CFL. Edmonton came off a win on the road against the awful Toronto Argonauts while the Stampeders played some intense football last week by tying the Saskatchewan Riders 44-44.

Calgary(8-6-1) is tied with Saskatchewan for first place in the West while the Edmonton Eskimos(7-8) last in the West. A win by the Stamps will clinch them a playoff berth while the Esk will be a point away from the Stamps. It is still a race in the Western front.

Calgary and Edmonton played against each other 3 times already this season. Edmonton won at the last minute on the first game with the score 38-35 for Edmonton. Then Labour Day back-to-back game were won by the Stamps with the score 32-8 and 35-34. Copeland is the biggest weapon for the Stamps offensively with 21 catches for 398 yards and 5 TD catch. On Defense, Jim Davis playing in his first game as a Stamps showed his former team that they made a mistake by getting 3 QB sacks on Sept. 11 game.

OFFENSE: Henry Burris had an okay game against the Riders last week. He finally passed for more than 200 yards last game after that 4 games slumps. He also threw 2 TD pass on the double OT.

Joffrey Reynolds had a monster game running for 3 TD. He was unstoppable last game too bad the other part of the offense weren't on the same boat. The OLine played a lot better last game giving Reynolds lots of room to run and Burris also got some time to look for receivers.

Teyo Johnson might miss the game due to injury. Cote says he is ready to go and help the Stamps. Nik Lewis missed practice one day due to stomach virus but he is expected to play.

DEFENSE: Not so sure if the Saskatchewan offense were that good last game or was it the Stamps' defense awful. They missed a lot of tackles agaisnt the Riders. Andy Fantusz torched them. It must have been the first time this season that I saw an awfuk defense.

SPECIAL TEAM: Burke Dales made some booming punts. He had a heck of a game vs the Riders. The Special Team coverage team were just as brutal as the defense tackling. Jesse Armstead had a great time running around untouched most of the game. Something has to change because the Eskimos have one of the most explosive punt/kickoff returner in Tristan Jackson.

-------

I got the feeling that Henry Burris confidence just went up after those 2 TD passes on OT last game. I can see that trend continuing against the Eskimos. Burris must use his legs a lot, and try to run the ball for a first down if he's got some openings. Hopefully Joffrey Reynolds will be busy again all game. With Romby Bryant and Burris combo start clicking, we can see Copeland getting some openings again.

GO STAMPS GO!!

More updates before game time.

If history means anything, expect a big game from Burris. He has very good numbers against the Esks since coming back to the Stamps.

It's sort of anti-climactic this week really.

It's true that unless either the stamps or riders win their next two with the other losing the next two that the final game will determine who finishs higher between the 2 teams.

However, BC still controls their destiny to win the division. If the stamps lose this game tonight that final game in Sask could easily be for second not first.

And if the Stamps lose their next 2, the final game in sask could be the difference between 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

I dont think you can say anti-climactic at all.

I've been unimpressed with the Stamps this year. Moreso lately but they haven't looked like last year's team at all. Burris in particular is clearly missing something. Is is Rambo? IF they fell to fourth nobody would be surprised. At least the defense had been playing well but now even that is in doubt.

I'm not confident in then at all. That said they could just as easily win as lose this game the following ones as there seems to be no rhyme or reason to their play.

I don't remember asking for your opinon on who I should cheer for.

I think Calgary is more of a threat to the Riders for the division than the Eskimos. You do realize that right?

Cheering for Edmonton should never be an option in anything

I do realize the Stamps are a bigger threat, I was just saying that whether or not the Stamps lose this week doesn't change anything in the long run. The division will still come down to Week 19 Stamps-Riders game.

ROSTER UPDATES:

CALGARY -R Blaine Kruger is in. FB Teyo Johnson is out.
Injuries: DL Derek Armstrong(arm), Alain Kashama(ankle), LB Tristan Black(leg), Lemarcus Rowell(knee), DB JR Ruffin(knee), Brandon Smith(knee), FB Teyo Johnson(ankle), WR Ken-Yon Rambo(knee-out for season), Ryan Thelwell(achilles-out for season).

EDMONTON - DL Xzavie Jackson and RB Calvin McCarthy are in; DL Jerome Haywood and DB Elliot Richardson are out.
Injuries: DB Willie Amos(leg), DL Adam Braidwood(knee), LB Rod Davis(shoulder), DL Jerome Haywood(leg), LB Lamar Herron(leg), OL Garrick Jones(shoulder), RB Jesse Lumsden(shoulder), DB Elliot Richardson(arm), DL Dario Romero(arm), DB Bradley Robinson(concussion), DB Lenny Williams(knee) and OL Greg Wojt(knee).

NOTABLE: SB Jeremaine Copeland is second in the league in both touchdown and receiving yardage. He is 24 yards behind Eskimos Fred Stamps in receiving yardage and behind Avon Coulbourne of Montreal in touchdown.

Joffrey Reynolds per game average of 64.6 yards against Edmonton over his career is lowest against any CFL team. Joffrey also now have 26 100 yards rushing game in his career and he is closing in on Earl Lunsford record of 28. He is now tied with Lovell Coleman.

A Stamps win tonight clinches a playoff berth for the Stamps.

Burris and his receivers needs to connect and try to keep the ball away from Ricky Ray. They should start running the ball at the beginning of the game then connect with Copeland, Lewis and have success with the short passes. Once that click, Burris can throw the ball deep.

Our defense need to stop Ricky Ray from staying in the pocket way too long. They should force him to make the play a lot tonight. At the same time, they need to stop Whitlock early and have him make mistakes early. Do not give Fred Stamps especially some rooms to get open on the field. Nump and run all the time.

Special team must tackle Jackson as soon he touch the ball. I am sure Dales will try to stay away from Jackson all night but that might be a tough task.

Anyways, I am so pumped up right now and cannot wait to watch the game.

GAME TIME: 8:00 pm at McMahon Stadium
TV: TSN (subject to blackout)... I am sure the stadium will be full so expect the game on TSN. If it's not, I think the Stampeder organization will force TSN to lift the blackout after the misunderstanding last week.

GO STAMPS GO!!

33-18 Stamps. I'm pumped for this game too, grinding the Schmoes' faces into the turf never gets old.

84-1 Esks. Late missed field goal breaks the shutout.

Bleh Stamps are just not sharp, again.

Stamps offense looks weak, defense looks disinterested. Someone get these guys motivated!

Where's the D? We are so lucky the score is only 6-1. Ray is getting the time of his life there in picking his receivers.

Where's the O? OLine are not giving Burris a lot of protection there. I hope things will change soon.

Nice play by Bryant to shake off the tackle. Now come on Stamps, less predictable offense please.
