well let me put it this way, if the box was Cameron Diaz, pushing the button was pounding her and someone died as a result, consider yourselves all dead.

Ooh, tough ones.

Well the deer one isn't tough -- lights out, Bambi.

The dog one is hard. Sneaking that word "pet" in there changes everything. And whose pet is it? Little Jimmy's retriever? No, I couldn't do it.

If it's Hitler's schnauzer or something, sure.

There must be some fancy word to describe it -- anthropocentric or something. My first thought was "which human will be sad if the dog dies?"

If I don't like the dog's owner, it's all over, Rover. Same dog, different owner, the dog lives. Harsh. You've ruined my afternoon.

Can we pick the person that dies?

If so, yes 100%.

No, its completely random.

for all you know, you push the button collect the dough and then get a phone call that granny fell over face first in a bowl of her favorite oatmeal.

Ethical question

You're a doctor working the late shift at the local hospital, your probably the best surgeon in the land.

Suddenly a new patient comes through the door on a gurney, he looks bad, he's got a gunshot wound in his chest. Your the only man in the city that can save his life, without your miracle hands he will bleed out and die.

A cop is accompanying you, he whispers that they found him over the body of a little girl who he had raped and then strangled, the cop also informs you that there is a possibility that he has been involved in more unsolved child abductions.

The man on the table is a former nobel peace prize winner who has successfully negotiated the end to several wars. As a add on he has diplomatic immunity.

What do you do?

How about this question, you can push the button, receive the million dollars, and one person dies, AND everyone else in the world has the opportunity to push the button as well. If you decide not to push the button, no one else gets the opportunity. Do you then push the button?
I think there is a slight logistical problem with having everyone push a button that kills one person...everyone would be dead.

No, not everyone would push the button. It certinaly doesn't make sense if everyone has to push the button.

Ah, you are correct, my bad. I misread your post.

Let me rephrase that. If the world was CP then most everyone would be rich and dead.

Another Question: With the box there is a one in 6 billion chance that the person you off is yourself, virtually zero. Say the chances of yourself dying increase, and let's remove the other people dying part, no one can die but yourself.

Would you press a button that would give you $10 million, but 1% of the time, you would die? What about $100 million dollars, but you would die 10% of the time?

If you'd take $10 million and risk the 1% chance of dying, what money amount would be too little for you to do the deal at a 1% chance of dying?

I wouldn't press the button to randomly kill someone no matter how much you gave me.

Bambi would be dead.

I wouldn't kill someone's pet dog for any amount of cash, at least not some random dog. If it was some vicious dog that attacked other dogs or people, then I wouldn't have an issue with it - but somebody's dog that never did any harm, and that they love? How could you live with yourself?

I would save the injured man because being a doctor I would have taken an oath to do just that.

I wouldn't kill my parents, or anyone else for that matter, to get an organ to put into my wife's or child's body. Again, how could you live with yourself?

I wouldn't press a button with a chance of killing myself unless that chance stayed around 1%, no matter how much money you offered me. Maybe if I was poor I might change my mind, but I live well enough now that I don't NEED huge amounts of money, so why risk your life?

HA! I just got from safeway and logged in to post a Klondike Bar. I saw them and it made me think of this post.

on the Doctor one, I'd save him because I'd sworn an oath, but then I'd prescribe the him propofol and lorazepam.

1. There's not enough money in the world for me to push a button to kill someone.

2. I wouldn't kill a deer for 10 grand, but I'd encourage my brother to do it.

3. I'm not killling a dog.

4. If I'm a doctor, I save the patient regardless of what he's done. Its not my place in that situation to play judge and jury, my purpose is to try and save the life, so I would.

Makes me think of the Joker.

There are 2 boats, one filled with jail convicts, and the one you're on filled with regular townspeople. You're given a button. If you press it, the 2nd boat blows up and all the people on it die. If you don't press it after half an hour, and you're still alive too, both boats blow up. Then do you press the button? What if you were on the boat with the convicts, would that change anything? How do you know the button won't blow you up, instead of them?

Through no fault of your own you find yourself on the streets. You have no money or access to money, no job and no where to live. After several days without a decent meal you finally get into a shelter.

The meal is a carton of milk, a ham sandwich a apple and a cookie. After eating you're still starving. You notice that the old man sitting next to me has dozed off without touching his meal. He looks like a man at the edge of death, he probably has no prospects and is probably never going to be able to pull himself back into society.

Do you take his meal while he sleeps?

I'd push the button no questions asked. Seriously, the bleeding heart love for humanity doesnt register with me theres just too many people to care for each and every single one, thats God's job, not mine.

Would I feel guilty about it? Only if I killed someone that I'd rather not have. But, if its truly random and joe blow in wherever the hell croaks then probably not.

As for the dying man in the Hospital, you save his life. Its your job, besides, he'll pay infinitely more for his evils if he lives than the simple death of a bleedout.
