Default Common driving Laws that are rarely followed

Why is it that some "rules" of the road are just never followed. The one that gets to me is uncontrolled intersections, especially 'T' intersections. 100% of the time the drivers going straight take the right of way, and the person from the other roadway yields (regardless if they are on the right or not).

What about pedestrians, are we supposed to wait until they make it "all the way" across the road before proceeding. Good luck yielding for that long in this society, the minute they are past your fender take off...

Have the rules changed?

Anybody have others?

Because we have so many drivers from other provinces. I know for example in Manitoba there are no uncontrolled intersections in cities- somebody has a yield. Which makes sense- give the yield to somebody. Otherwise you have to approach every intersection to see if you can see the side of a stop sign.

So technically on MacLeod Trail I should slow down at every cross street to see if they have a stop sign or not.

Hey movie stars - you don't get two parking spots because you have a "hot" car. Park between the yellow lines like the rest of us.

I always wait. There's one crosswalk near my work that's very long and I want to make sure some dunce in the opposite lane doesn't peg someone because they see my car go.

Nobody in this stupid city signals when they change lanes.

For some reason it really bothers me. Even if they don't' cut me off, I still curse at people who can't be bothered to signal.

When turning left, you are supposed to go to the first available lane.

You are not supposed to change lanes in an intersection.

Uncontrolled intersections? Who does have the right of way? Hard to find an answer after searching it on google. Does anybody know for sure?

Ken0042 is absolutely right, should have to slow down at each intersection on MacLeod to make sure each intersection is controlled. Makes no sense. Half the time you can't even see if there is a stop sign or not because it could be hidden behind a tree.

I talked to a homeowner who lives by one and he says there are accidents there all the time. How much does it cost to put up a yield sign?

I think it's the person on the right goes but nobody does it.

Here's a tricky one: A 3-lane oneway forming a t-intersection with a 2-way roadway. If you are in the center lane, can you make a dual turn into the outer lane?

I hate it when I am down town and the person in front of me doesn't know you can turn left from a one-way street onto a one-way street.

Edit: oops, at a red light that is...

I'm going to say Yes.

The un controlled intersection thing gets me all the time. Just yesterday on my way to work I take a semi short cut through a residential area. Lots of uncontrolled intersections. Some guy is just flying through and doesn't even look at me, on his right, or attempt to stop. I lay on the horn and he looks at me all pissed off and gives me the finger.. well he was going the opposite way from the hospital so it couldn't be any kind of emergency like that.. just an ignorant old prick that didn't know how to drive.

I work right by the campus I attended for my degree so I have been traversing these backroad residential streets for years now and this happens about once a week.. if I am not the guy paying attention I could have written off a 100 cars by now.

People who tail gate really piss me off as well. I generally go between 50-60, depending on the road, if its a straight away with no residential or pedestrians I will go 60+ in a 50, otherwise I am pretty cautious. I have never been in an accident and I would like to keep it that way.. also here in Stoon we get a lot of "locals" drunkenly stumbling across the street at random times on my end of the city, so I have to be paying attention and go a speed that allows me to slow down if need be.

Last winter I was doing about 55 down a 50 street, fairly busy street here (19th W for anyone in Stoon or who knows the City) Also kind of a rough part of town, with a lot of "locals". There is a guy behind me just riding my ass beyond belief, and not in that way like he was in his car there was nothing gay or sexual about it. Anyway, I continue at my speed and there is a right hand lane, so I figure he will just take it and go around me. But no, he persists, so up the block I see some "locals" trying to cross the street, at a crosswalk mind you, and typical prairie drivers NOBODY is stopping. So I start to slow down and this asshat has had enough! Screw this guy going 55 on icey slippery roads in the middle of winter on a busy cross walk street! He hammers it to go around me, not even noticing what I have stopped for, what is right infront of him, and damn near takes the first ones head off as he attempts to cross the street. Jerkface McClownShoes doesn't even pause, he just keeps ripping down the road probably blaring Nickleback and beating his girlfriend with his spare fist. They all kind of looked at me and then even more cautiously than before stumbled across the road.. but like I mean this guy was inches away from going right over this group.. if they had stepped off the road 2 seconds earlier it would have been lights out.

I assume you forgot to end that sentence with "on a red light.".

A rule I see that is rarely followed is when someone turns from the inside lane onto a multiple lane street. If you're on the inside lane, you're supposed to stay there, but often people just turn into whichever lane is most convenient for them. Usually it doesn't matter, but if someone coming from the opposite direction is turning the same way, you could end up side-swiping each other.

It is okay to turn right on red unless it is signed otherwise. I have sat behind a few people as of late that don't seem to know this.

Also as stated before merge ≠ stop. If you have stopped in a merge lane for any other reason than the ###### in front of you has stopped, you are a terrible driver. Also if you merge at 20-30km below the speed limit you also suck.

As far as I know though every single intersection on Macloed Trail is controlled. Usually an uncontrolled intersection is only on side streets in residential areas.

I used to do the old "oh I may or may not have dropped something hot on myself and need to aggressively hit the brakes for seemingly no reason" to tailgaters. It was a fun ride, but after a woman my mom works with had their rear passenger window smashed with a baseball bat during a road rage incident I decided to change up strategy.

I now just lay off the gas and get slower and slower. Usually by the time you hit 10 under the limit they find a way to get around you.

Calgarians have absolutely NO CLUE how to navigate a traffic circle. People just burn into it assuming they have right of way. When you honk at them, they have ZERO IDEA why and assume you're the idiot. God, it's so frustrating, and it's not that difficult to figure out. Hell, the city has to post signs at each entrance just to explain who does have right of way, yet every day it's the same dumb idiots who can't figure it out.
