Racism is very much alive and well in a few southern states. I wonder how long this idiot judge will be practicing when Obama gets wind of this!
He isnt a Federal Judge, so Obama wont be able to do anything other than make a speech.

Look for Republican Governor (and one of the few bright lights in the RNP) Bobby Jindahl to deal with this swiftly with as much media hype as humanly possible.

The racism is Louisiana goes both ways.

Remember when the mayor New Orleans said that he would re-build New Orleans as a "chocolate city", and suggested that was the way it should be? He suggested that white people did not belong there.

Whoa, enough with the Louisiana bashing! Just because this priest is a moron does not mean that the entire state is like that. Yes, racism is still a problem in some parts but it is everywhere. I love Louisiana, go there often, especially New Orleans and I have never seen a problem with racism in that city. I just about lmao about the poster with the Texas reference. That state is full of the most ignorant stupid people on the planet!

It was a state judge. The state legal body in Louisiana is supposed to be secular I think.

I agree. All liberals blatantly fabricate their anger towards racism in the justice system. Damn those mischievous liberals!

Perfect they have inter racial marriages sorted out, now they just need to debunk that silly myth about "evolution" and Louisanna will officially have reverted back to the 1800's. Congrats!

Did you look at it and know exactly what I was talking about? I would assume so based on your cryptic response. So if I get the point across why would I waste my time making my response more aesthetically pleasing to you?

That's disgusting, though sadly not shocking for the deep south.

All that I know is that Louisianna just moved way down the list of places that I'd like to visit with my non-white wife.
I await the update in a few days where this judge has been squashed like a bug.

I visited New Orleans pre-Katrina and it did strike me as a pretty tense place . . . . . . or, as Mayor Nagin called it post-Katrina, a "chocolate city."

Just wasting time at work and busting chops, but I should have probably put it in green. Anyway, no offense intended, and I agree with your point. Having said that, everyone in both Texas and Louisianna is crazy.

Now I'm not saying I agree with this racist ahole but is it not his right to choose who he grants marriage licenses to?

Not sure if the point of the thread is to point out all the heinous stuff that happens in places like Louisiana or that he should be forced, but I'm just pointing out that I do believe it is his right to be a racist ahole even if he shouldn't be one.

As a private citizen, it is his right... but that right is, of course, limited.

The problem here is that he didn't exercise that right as a private citizen. He did so as a member of the judiciary, even if only as a justice of peace. In his professional role you have to uphold the law, not apply pursuant to your personal beliefs. If the people met the legal requirements to be married, I think he would have to marry them. Suggesting the couple find another JP to do the ceremony strikes me as a violation of both his professional duties and perhaps even more broadly the rule of law. He screwed up, plain and simple.

Having said that, I'm completely baffled as to why people are discussing Ray Nagin's comments about "chocolate city". I'm not as smart as Peter12 (who is, really?), but can someone explain their relevance to me here?

The state is "Louisiana."

As horrible as this incident is, this is what virtually every same-sex couple in the US has to contend with. This couple has legal recourse and the support of most of the hundreds of millions of American citizens. A same-sex couple subject to the same outrage has no recourse whatsoever and likely the support of a tiny minority of their fellow Americans.

He's not even a state judge. He's a "justice of the peace."

All that means is that he applied for a license to perform marriages. The Canadian equivalent is "marriage commissioner."

I'm not saying he isn't a racist, just that maybe we should be cautious about assuming that a single ######bag J.O.P. means that racism is institutionalized in Louisiana.

i like this quote further down the article

Quote:
"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. She said the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 "that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."
well, you know, unless you happen to be the gay
