Life.
In actuality, he got 8 years, and has already served 2.5, which is where the 5.5 years left comes in.

On top of everything, I just can't believe this guy is going to be able to drive again. Disgusting.

On twitter, the Calgary Herald posts a story with a link to their website before the link is active. The CBC posts a story to their website and tweets about it later. The Calgary Sun posts a story to twitter about the same time as the link on their website becomes active.
The Sun beat the Herald and the CBC on twitter and on the web. Guess they don't have to worry about editing or proofing their stories at the Sun so that helps.

Are all sentences in Canada concurrent, why can't people like this get consecutive sentences for each person that they killed.

Had an idea!

I find it quite comical that they took away his Class 1 license.
An employer would have to be extremely desperate to hire him anyways. But hey, lets really punish him. Take away his Class 1 license!

Ugh. Really hoped the joke legal system we have here would have bucked the trend for a change in this case.
Disappointed again. Another poor example of the bipolar say one thing do another campaign against impaired driving in this province.

Sentences are almost always concurrent. There are certain offences where if convicted you are supposed to get a sentence consecutive to other sentences imposed for crimes arising from the same incident (e.g., some gun offences). Otherwise, you only get a consecutive sentence if you are already serving prison time or are in jail because of a fine default.
Victims of Violence has some good info about sentencing in Canada: http://www.victimsofviolence.on.ca/r...=361&Itemid=51

In a perfect world you'd have no insurance company willing to insure him.
Hopefully when he does get to drive again the premiums are so high that he can't afford it.

How does parole work? something like parole after one-third is served. If so, then in actuality it would mean the guy would only serve 20 months in prison?
That would be a real kick in the face to the family who lost so many loved ones.

That's a good point, Dion! Although I guess sometimes people like him would just choose to drive uninsured in that case.

Yes, if he minds is P's and Q's federal prison will let you out 1/3 time served providing they don't think your dangerous to society.

Then he would just drive without insurance. I mean he killed 5 people. Would he really care if he had insurance to drive?

According to CBC info,
Quote:
banning him for life from a holding a licence that would allow him to drive a commercial vehicle.
Tschetter won't be able to hold a regular driver's licence for five years after his release. He is also banned from owning firearms and must submit a DNA sample.

Although I'd never wish harm to anyone, I'd take a drunk driver wrapped around a light pole any day if the alternative is innocent lives harmed or lost.
Sorry if that sounds harsh. Actually - not sorry.

He'll be out in two years.
Its a disgusting sentence, I don't care about the apology to the family, thats more about a person being sorry that they were caught and putting on a show for a guilible judge. He whiped out 5 people because he's a selfish dangerous drunk and he serves less time then a pick pocket.
There's something wrong with our criminal justice system, or there's something really wrong with the values of the judges who continually give out light sentences or slap people on the hand in the misguided hope that these evil people will ever change their way.
You can bet that three years down the road this scumbag will be picked up for drinking and driving with a suspended sentence and he'll get some nice comfy house arrest.
I'm completely livid, he'll probably also serve his sentence in one of the nice cottage jails where the inmates have little bbq's and 9 hole golf courses to pass the day away.

If anyone here practices criminal law they can correct me, but I believe he is eligible for parole after serving 1/3 of his sentence, which would be after 2 2/3 years, and since he is already credited with 2.5... theorectically, he can be out in 2 months. Again, this is how I understand it, but I have not practiced a minute of criminal law, beyond the most minor stuff when I was just starting out.
