Harper could change Canada 'beyond recognition': Iggy

One thing is for sure... Iggy is always good for a laugh. What a clown. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics...229291-cp.html
	Quote:

		| Michael Ignatieff unleashed a blistering broadside against the Conservatives today as he sought to explain to election-averse Canadians why the Harper government is not worthy of survival.
The Liberal leader’s first stab at defeating the minority government — a non-confidence motion to be voted on later today — is doomed to fail.
 |
	Quote:

		| Ignatieff said the government has demonstrated a pattern of “incompetence” and “malice,” driven by what he called a “starve-the-beast ideology” to permanently dilute the powers of the federal government.
He capped the attack with a dire warning: “It will weaken and eventually it could change Canada beyond recognition.”

I actually agree with a lot of the points that Ignatieff puts forward here (and which are conspicuously absent from the first post!). He didn't come out and say Harper should be taken down, and that is it...he has some basis for thinking that:
He accused the government of failing to:

 —
Manage the country’s finances. He pointed out that government estimates of this fiscal year’s deficit have ballooned to almost $60 billion from zero.
 —
Protect Canadian citizens when they run into trouble abroad. Ignatieff implied a racist motive, charging that people with names like “Suaad Mohamud or (Abousfian) Abdelrazik . . . cannot count on the protection of the Canadian government.”
 —
Get infrastructure funding flowing quickly. What little money has flowed, he said has gone disproportionately to Conservative ridings.
 —
Provide a timely vaccine against the H1N1 flu virus.
 —
Ensure a stable supply of medical isotopes amid a shortage that has delayed cancer and heart tests.
 —
Defend Canada’s public health-care system against attacks in the United States.
 — Review foreign takeovers of Canadian companies, like Nortel, Inco, Falconbridge, Stelco and Alcan.

I also have a feeling that if the only thing that changed was the names of the parties and the leaders that people on this board would be applauding this move and most of the issues he brings up as being the right thing to do.

			He is partly correct.
The major difference between the Libs and the Cons is the Cons believe in a smaller Federal Government and more autonomy for the Provinces where as the Libs believe in the big brother approach.

That is why durring the Cretien era they worried that if the CA/Cons got in that Health Care would go to shat because with less influence over the provinces the Feds couldnt force provinces like Alberta to conforming to the Canada Health Act.

Kind of strange, what kind of Dictionary do they use at Harvard? Here is a quote from that article...
"He summed up the Conservative approach to governing as: “All adversaries are enemies.."

MW defines it as the following:

Main Entry: 1ad·ver·sary
Pronunciation: \ˈad-və(r)-ˌser-ē, -ˌse-rē\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural ad·ver·sar·ies
Date: 14th century
: one that contends with, opposes, or resists : enemy
Wow, needs to be added - other than economy a few reasons why they are pushing this non confidence motion (again from the article):
Protect Canadian citizens when they run into trouble abroad. Ignatieff implied a racist motive, charging that people with names like “Suaad Mohamud or (Abousfian) Abdelrazik . . . cannot count on the protection of the Canadian government.”
—
Provide a timely vaccine against the H1N1 flu virus.
—
Ensure a stable supply of medical isotopes amid a shortage that has delayed cancer and heart tests.
—
Defend Canada’s public health-care system against attacks in the United States.

My politics lie closer to the Liberals than the Conservatives, but I haven't liked either of their past two leaders, so I almost am hoping for the Conservatives to maintain their hold on power in the country. I'm tired of going and voting Green Party because there were no other alternatives I could stomach.

Provide a timely vaccine against the H1N1 flu virus. I didn't realize that the Government produced vaccines and am pretty sure that every Government in the world is doing everything they can to get this as quickly as possible. Stuff like this takes time. How can you blame the Tories.

Ensure a stable supply of medical isotopes amid a shortage that has delayed cancer and heart tests. Wow, the power they must have to be able to prevent foreign isotope manufacturers from closing down manufacturing plants. Give me a break

Most of the items listed here are completely beyond the control of the Government or just plain stupid. The Liberals are literally blaming every single problem that is going on in the world on the Conservatives. You forgot to mention how it was the Conservatives fault we are even in the recession. |

I have a feeling that points 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 would significantly add to "ballooned deficit" thus making Ignatieff a hypocrite for the criticism in point1.

Nothing to see here. Canadians aren't buying in, yet again. Try again Liberals.

This table won't format properly. Key point is con's at 37% and growing, liberals down to 29%.

Sunday morning on CPAC is when Nik Nanos comes out with new numbers. Those are historically (at least the last 3 elections I have kept track of) the most accurate polling data.

Its from alot of stuff I assume.

It stems from the 2 parties differing philosophy of what a $70 Canadian Passport means - does it mean that if you go do a place that isnt the safest and something happens that Canada should spend money to come get you - Phillipeans is a good example today, I am sure there are a few non racist Canadians or even South Asians trapped, but I doubt you will see them on the CBC demanding the govt fly them out for free.

They bring out the racist word likely because of what happened in Lebanon a few years ago, and this Toronto woman, who is suing for 12 mil or so because Canada didnt believe who she said she was and also took away her passport and forwarded to Nigerian? authorities for fraud.

Here is a pic from the National Post (apologize for size). One is her passport pic and one is the pic at the Canadian embassy/consulate. From that and a few basic questions like what does TTC stand for, who is or have been Canada's Prime Ministers among others (she had resided in Toronto for 10 years), also she couldnt tell the birth date of her son or name Lake Ontario according to court papers filed today.

She eventually had a DNA match test done with her son in TO at which time Canada gave her passport back and returned her home.

He accused the government of failing to:
 —

Probably would have been a much smaller deficit if harper hadn't agreed with Ignatief's ideas for stimulating the economy. But then the Liberal's would have bleated that the Conservatives were cold to Canada's lead. Besides anyone who didn't expect a ballooning spending deficit during a world wide recession is fooling.
 —
Protect Canadian citizens when they run into trouble abroad. Ignatieff implied a racist motive, charging that people with names like “Suaad Mohamud or (Abousfian) Abdelrazik . . . cannot count on the protection of the Canadian government.”

The Liberal's were guilty of the same kind of enfractions during their run in power, plus its also easy to forget that the Conservatives did bring that woman home from the mexican prisons. I also think that its slightly wrong that the Liberal's are once again crying racist which is their typical fear mongering.
 —
Get infrastructure funding flowing quickly. What little money has flowed, he said has gone disproportionately to Conservative ridings.

Thats yet to be proven, plus there were counter arguments from municipalities recently that they were receiving infrastructure dollars. There was also a discussion on powerplay that a lot of the stimulus money was out there however the projects were still in the study and approval stages and it was at that point out of the governments hands.
 —
Provide a timely vaccine against the H1N1 flu virus.

Agreed, however I don't think that this is a bring down the government issue.
 —
Ensure a stable supply of medical isotopes amid a shortage that has delayed cancer and heart tests.

This problem didn't spring up overnight, the isotope problem pretty much exploded due to a lot of neglect by the previous governments, how can you fix something that was badly broken when the Cons showed up to government. Neither party has been a positive change agent for the isotope problem
 —
Defend Canada’s public health-care system against attacks in the United States.

 Who cares

 — Review foreign takeovers of Canadian companies, like Nortel, Inco, Falconbridge, Stelco and Alcan.

Sure, I'd love to see that, but companies like Nortel were dying anyways and there wasn't that much national interest in them

I'm beginning to think after watching Ignatieff in action that he's not all that much better then Dion.
He's slowly losing control of the party especially in Quebec, he has no platform. He's been a weakling so far in dealing with the government, he's really been uninspiring.

Well, the Liberals can't attack the Tories for being "too American" anymore, so they evidently went even lower.

The point I would make to Mr. Ignatief is that an accusation of racism where none is proven to exist is racist in itself.
