Default Captain Kirk wants Elephant beamed out of Edmonton

I know leaving Edmonton is always a good thing for anyone including elephants, but because of her condition shouldn't she be staying at the zoo for help with her breathing problems?

Plus if she is that old wouldn't moving her kill her? Plus she probably has built a pretty good relationship with the trainers there.

Maybe they can give her a day pass to the mall. Who wouldn't be happy there?

http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/St...862/story.html

However, councillors were given a closed-door update on Lucy’s condition Tuesday after a tooth which had been giving her breathing problems fell out last week.
There are no immediate plans to move her. The tooth had been crowding a second tooth that was growing in to replace it, causing swelling in the sinus area that made it difficult for the elephant to breathe through her trunk, according to a message posted on the Valley Zoo website.
However, the breathing problem has continued. A veterinarian is monitoring Lucy and consulting with an expert on elephant dental health to determine the proper treatment for her, the web posting says.

Isn't relocating life forms against the Prime Directive?

No, but interfering with pre-warp civilizations is. Since elephants aren't sentient beings, relocating them does not violate the Prime Directive. Ditto for Edmontonians.

You're mistaken. The Prime Directive dictates that you cannot interfere with any world that does not have both warp speed capabilities and has a unified world government. You cannot interfere with them with or without their knowledge!

I out-nerded you.

You are all forgetting that Captain Kirk doesn't believe in the Prime Directive.

I watched ST: Generations this weekend, what a pitiful way to kill Kirk. At least give him a decent death like crashing the enterprise in a Klingon Warbird or single handily releasing the warp core.

lol, one of the best thread derailments ever. By post 5 elephants are dismissed from the thread and replaced by prime directive bylaws, by post 11 Captain Kirks sexual habits are being discussed.

he Prime Directive dictates that there can be no interference with the internal development of pre-warp civilizations, consistent with the historical real world concept of Westphalian sovereignty. It has special implications, however, for civilizations that have not yet developed the technology for interstellar spaceflight ("pre-warp"), since no primitive culture can be given or exposed to any information regarding advanced technology or the existence of extraplanetary civilizations, lest this exposure alter the natural development of the civilization. Although this was the only application stated by Captain Kirk in "Return of the Archons", by the 24th Century, it had been indicated to include purposeful efforts to improve or change in any way the natural course of such a society, even if that change is well-intentioned and kept completely secret.
"Pre-warp" is defined as any culture which has not yet attained warp drive technology. Starfleet allows scientific missions to investigate and secretly move amongst pre-warp civilizations as long as no advanced technology is left behind, and there is no interference with events or no revelation of their identity. This can usually be accomplished with hidden observation posts, but Federation personnel may disguise themselves as local sentient life and interact with them.

Alright, back on topic.

Some of the comments on the CTV site are awesome.

I hope I live to see the day when there are no more zoos anywhere.

Imagine yourself in a human zoo. oh yeah, that's called prison.

Animals belong in the wild. Free. What did they ever do to us to merit being imprisoned. We can watch them on YouTube and other sites now, we don't need zoos.
Why have zoos? Kids can learn everything online now anyways right?

In Shatner's defense, it is kind of cruel to make an elephant live in Edmonton.

there's apparently another 'celebrity' actually coming to edmonton to talk to people about this elephant. Didn't catch who, just heard that part on the news broadcast. After all, celebrities know what's best in all areas, moreso than experts so we better listen to them.

*edit* Bob Barker is the other guy coming to edmonton about this
