Mount Royal College now Mount Royal University
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/To...562/story.html
Quote:
Thousands of students signed up for Mount Royal College this fall. But when they start classes next Thursday, they'll be attending Mount Royal University--the first new public university to be launched in Alberta since Athabasca University opened in 1970.
The eagerly awaited announcement comes on campus at 2:30 p. m. today from Premier Ed Stelmach and Advanced Education Minister Doug Horner.
Government sources say the change from college to university will take effect immediately, enabled by a simultaneous order-in-council released in Edmonton.
Today's formalities finally end a gruelling multi-year quest for university status that often seemed doomed because of inter-school rivalries.
Hardly anybody in any other university or college wanted Mount Royal to take this leap. The University of Calgary was always quietly opposed, preferring to make Mount Royal its own satellite university campus.
Sensitive to these jealousies, the government will present the MRU triumph as part of the overall Campus Alberta plan. Edmonton's Grant Mac-Ewan College won't be far behind Mount Royal on the university podium.
The timing of today's announcement is also propelled by the Calgary-Glenmore byelection being contested just down the road in southwest Calgary.
Handing Calgary a second university, when Edmonton doesn't have a second one (yet), is a shrewd counter to charges that Stelmach's government is anti-Calgary.

Awesome news to wake up to. Loved my 4 years there.
I guess I need a new username since 1) I graduated not too long ago, and 2) it's not MRC anymore

Mount Royal University sounds weird, oh well at least Calgary can say it boasts two universities now... take that Lethbridge!

I attended the former MRC years ago. I really enjoyed it back then and it's great to see the growth it's made the past 9-10 years. IIRC, the major expansion and growth really began a year or two after I left (coincidence?).
MRCbiology... don't request a name change. Retro is in (ala the Flames new jersey).

Did my degree at UOC but did a ton of other courses at MRC. Still preferred MRC.
I wonder if tuition wars will start up?

Still wouldn't go to MR if I wanted a real degree.

I hear they have a "How to Post Without Being Consistently Annoying 101" course you might want to look into.

I always like to defend MRC/MRU because I got on with the company I'm with (doing a job I love) because the company specifically recruits at MRC rather than the UofC for business grads. As the head of HR put it at the time, MRC grads don't need to be taught how to work (this coming from a guy who did his undergrad at UofC)
Personally I have nothing against any of the U's. I got accepted into the UofA and UofC, but chose MRC to save money and because I felt it gave me as good an option for undergrad business as the U.

And *I* hear you can choose not to say anything at all if you don't have anything to offer other than random, spiteful and unfunny commentary limited to 1 or at most 2 sentences.
Unless, of course, your real goal *is* make people dislike you and put you on ignore. Is that what you're driving at? Seems like a rather petty ambition to me.

My goal is to comment on threads that elicit a response from me.
I couldn't possibly hope to be a pillar and shining light of the community like yourself. I want to set realistic goals for myself. But thanks for briefly coming down from your pedestal to school me.

Haha...there was a thread a while back where someone thought your username had something to do with you being in biology!
As for Mount Royal, whatever, as U of C student I can confidently say that maybe some competition would light a fire under the administration's asses to turn down the suck.
I have nothing for or against Mount Royal, other than now they're not going to be so easy to make fun of, but the U of C certainly has significant room for improvement.

At first I thought you were a fan of Mr. C - which I assumed was some kind of Japanese softdrink, and that "boicgy" was just poor latinisation of some kind of weird asian catchphrase. So you can always fall back on that interpretation if people question your credentials.
Or just tell 'em, "I'm old-skool, dude. I was with Mount Royal back when it was nothing but a field and a faraway look in the eyes of Professor Mount and Dr. Royal."

I was accepted by a bunch of other Universities but went to U of C to stay at home, regret it, felt that the faculty I was in was severely underfunded and not cared about at all, hopefully this creates some healthy competition and improves both universities.

Mount Royal was designed as a shopping mall in case of failure as a College. I thought it was pretty interesting. If you walk around, you can tell there are places for stores, the food court, but what's neat is the "study spots" are fireplaces, waterfalls, etc (if they were up and running). If you think about it, it looks damn near like a mall would look. Thought that was interesting.

I went to U of C, but they offer the same degree at MRU now... they didn't offer it when I started, or I might have gone there.
I might still go there for a different program, eventually.

You need to get back on whatever drugs you recently decided to quit using.
Do it for the greater good.
