Default Habs listen to Keith, bring in Seabrook

The Montreal Canadiens were getting sick of hearing Duncan Keith crying about not having his favourite defensive partner to play with, so the Habs made it a reality today by acquiring Brent Seabrook from the Devils.

The deal breaks down like this:

To Montreal

Brent Seabrook
2nd Rounder (NJD) 2010
$5.85mm in cash

To New Jersey

Zach Kassian (13th overall pick, 2009)
Mattias Tedenby (24th overall pick, 2008)
Ryan Stoa
4th Rounder (CAR) 2010

This was not an easy deal for either team to make, but the fact is the two teams are going in opposite directions. Any time I can add a player of Seabrook's calibre without giving up a CPHL'er, I will.

That being said, Stoa is a Calder Candidate this year, Kassian is a 13th overall pick, and Tedenby is just pure Swedish awesomeness. The Devils have added to their prospect depth substantially with this move. The Habs have enough prospect depth we were able to make a move like this.

Thanks to Steve for the discussions; they were on and off for the last 3 weeks so it was good to see it get done.

Well I think the Devils should have been asking for at least one somewhat CPHL ready player back as part of that package. It would be one thing to trade Jovanovski for a package of prospects. But to trade Seabrook for one...he could have been a core piece once the rebuild took shape.

Everything hinges on how those prospects turn out though. Tedenby has some intriguing potential...than again so did Stanislav Chistov at one point in time.

Just what the Habs needed...another superstar on their team.

I like this for the Habs. I would only deal good young core guys like Seabrook for absolute stud prospects (like Duchene).

I agree with you Chad, a lot does hinge on the quality of how the prospects turn out, but when you are acquiring 3 guys who have all had some time to develop, the chances are decent. Tedenby looked outstanding in the SEL playoffs and the Devils prospects camp and Stoa will likely be on the 3rd line for the Avs this year. The Sabres need toughness and Kassian is really the only guy who could fill that.

It's a tough call, I really hated giving up all those prospects because I think they all could be in the NHL, but at the same time Seabrook is proven. He's also $6mm as well...

Trading for/away prospects is a gamble no matter which side you're on.

I like the deal both ways. Obviously for Montreal they pick up a stud on defense. Man, Montreal has a stacked team!

For New Jersey I like it cause they get 3 quality prospects. Stoa should be on the team this year and provide instant offense. Tedenby is a very highly regarded prospect and Kassian was also a 1st rounder. A good return for New Jersey imo as they are in full rebuild mode. This season is a lost cause but to stack up on prospects works. Steve needs to trade Guerin and Schneider to continue the rebuild.

PS......Tedenby was 24th overall in 2008, not 26th overall in 2009.

Its an interesting trade for sure...

My concern on prospects is these guys are still mid first rounders.. these guys are type of players where it could take them 2 years to make it to the NHL.

Making them long ways away to be a CPHLer.

I like this deal a lot for the Habs as they get the proven asset for 3 question marks. All hinges on how quick these guys make the NHL and whether or not they succeed.

Not sure what happened or didn't happen but the one thing I've learned over the years is if you are on the verge of a deal and don't pull the trigger - it may not be on the table for you very long. Gotta move quickly in the CPHL.

LOL I'm just giving simmer a hard time...it just happened he was the one I asked about the deal, if he thought it was ok. Didn't see the devils online so I went away and when I come back simmer had pulled the trigger

Ultimately I think CMPunk needed to go to the gym more than he needed to trade for Brent Seabrook. Judging by the size of his head....he needs some serious tread mill time.

Ya, steve and I had chatted about Seabrook for a while (pretty sure I've been pestering him for a month). We had thrown around a few combinations but ended up settling on one today.

Sorry Spike, crappy timing.
